ABSTRACT Valence-band structures of U3Ni3Sn4, U3Ni3Sb4, U3Cu3Sn4 and U3Cu3Sb4 ranging from a semiconductor to a heavy fermion system, are studied using photoemission spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation. We found that the Ni3d band in U3Ni3Sn4 is not fully filled up, the Cu 3d states in the ferromagnet U3Cu3Sb4 are strongly hybridized with the Sb 5p states, but the 3d states are localized in the heavy-fermion compound U3Cu3Sn4. However, the U 5⨍ emission spectra obtained by the resonant photoemission technique are nearly identical for all compounds and have an asymmetric peak of 1.6 eV in width.

ABSTRACT: Recent results of APW band calculations of ThNiSn, Th_3Ni_3Sb_4 and La_3Au_3Sb_4 are summarized. These compounds are proper reference materials for the study of semiconductor-like property of UNiSn, U_3Ni_3Sb_4, Ce_3Au_3Sb_4 and Ce_3Pt_3Sb_4. The valence bands consist of the Sn/Sb 5 p and the Ni 3d/Au 5d states. The conduction bands are derived from the Th 6d/La 5d states and are raised by the mixing between the Th 6d/La 5d state and the Ni 3d/Au 5d state. A band gap appears between the occupied valence bands and the empty conduction bands. On the basis of these results, the origin of gap formation in UNiSn, U_3Ni_3Sb_4, Ce_3Au_3Sb_4, Ce_3Pt_3Sb_4 and isostructural uranium and cerium compounds is discussed.

ABSTRACT: We have studied the electronic structure of CeNiSn, a valence-fluctuating Ce compound which opens a small gap at low temperatures, by photoemission spectroscopy in comparison with the Kondo systems CePdSn and CePtSn. The Sn 5p band crosses the Fermi level in every compound. The Ni 3d band is located close to the Fermi level and shown to be incompletely filled due to hybridization with the unoccupied Sn 5p states. The Ce core-level spectra indicate that CeNiSn is a valence-fluctuating compound very close to a trivalent system. The Ce 4f states are hybridized with the Ni 3d and Sn 5p band states; the Ce 4f-Sn 5p hybridization is suggested to be stronger than the Ce 4f-Ni 3d hybridization.

ABSTRACT: Valence state and U 4f core spectra of ternary uranium compounds U3T3X4(T=Ni, Cu and X=Sn, Sb) are measured by X-ray photoemission and bremsstrahlung isochromat spectroscopy. The diffreences in the spectral shapes of valence bands suggest the importance of the hybridization of U 5f states with T 3d and X 5p states. For all compounds, the unoccupied U 5f state spectra are similar in shape except for small differences in the tailings.
