The psychosocial factors which were significant predictors of delay were operationally defined and measured unconscious mental processes and mechanisms including ego-defences and affects. The study was essentially construct validation research relevant to testing predictions derived from psychoanalytic theory. The significant results confirmed the hypotheses and hence the theoretical premises of psychoanalysis with respect to unconscious ego defences and affects.
The results had important implications for cancer educators and surgeons attempting to promote early diagnosis of symptoms of breast cancer as well as reducing morbidity and mortality. The research was among the first successful attempts to measure unconscious mental processes and to use such measures to predict behaviour and outcome.
