ABSTRACT We discuss a nonlinear forced magnetohydrodynamic dynamo simulation that exhibits a surprising range of behavior, including multiple hydrodynamic states with different dynamo properties. Magnetic fields may decay after initial kinematic amplification. This behavior emphasizes that initial conditions must be taken into account when classifying nonlinear dynamos.
