ABSTRACT The ionic species of the tetra- and hexavalent actinides that are extracted from nitric acid by tri-n-octylamine-xylene solutions have been identified as M(NO3)62− and MO2(NO3)3−, respectively. The spectrum of each metal in TOA solution is shown to be nearly identical to that of an organic solution of the corresponding tetraethylammonium salt; and, in the case of the tetravalent ions, nearly identical to a concentrated nitric acid solution of the metal.
