Conformal phosphor coating using capillary microchannel for controlling color deviation of phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes

ABSTRACT We demonstrated a conformal phosphor coating method for phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) using capillary microchannel formed by a fixture. The mixture of the phosphor particles and the silicone spontaneously flows in capillary microchannel and was pinned at the edge of the fixture due to the surface tension effect. The present coating method was applied to different packaging types with both the conventional chip and the vertical injection chip. Experimental results show this method can efficiently improve the angular color uniformity (ACU). Compared with those samples packaged by conventional dispensing coating, angular color correlated temperature (CCT) deviation of the test samples by the present method can reduce from 1500K to 200K for the average CCT 5200K from -90° to +90 view angles, and reduce from 5000K to 1000K for the average CCT 9150K. Additionally, this method can prevent the packaging non-consistency that the average CCT varies from package to package due to the deviation of phosphor-silicone mixture volume. In the experiments, even when the phosphor-silicone mixture volume varies from 0.3 µl to 0.5 µl, the deviation of the average CCT is less than 80K.

    ABSTRACT: For further improvements to the reliability and the white light quality of phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (LEDs), it is imperative to understand how the compositional, optical, and thermal properties of the materials constituting the color-conversion elements (CCEs) affect their respective thermal loads. By means of a combined optical and thermal simulation procedure, a comprehensive discussion is given on the underlying coherences of the absorption profi le of the blue LED light, the phosphor concentration, the quantum effi ciency of the phosphor, and the thermal conductivities of the CCEs. Some general strategies of material composition and design are deduced in order to minimize the thermal load of the CCEs, which is a prerequisite for correlated color temperature maintenance and long-term material reliability of phosphor-converted white LEDs.

    ABSTRACT: In recent years, due to the fast development of high power light-emitting diode (LED), its lifetime prediction and assessment have become a crucial issue. Although the in situ measurement has been widely used for reliability testing in laser diode community, it has not been applied commonly in LED community. In this paper, an online testing method for LED life projection under accelerated reliability test was proposed and the prototype was built. The optical parametric data were collected. The systematic error and the measuring uncertainty were calculated to be within 0.2% and within 2%, respectively. With this online testing method, experimental data can be acquired continuously and sufficient amount of data can be gathered. Thus, the projection fitting accuracy can be improved (r(2) = 0.954) and testing duration can be shortened.

    ABSTRACT: In this study, we examined the robustness of point light source approximation in lens design for light-emitting diode (LED) packages by Monte Carlo ray-tracing simulations. We modeled three representative freeform lenses first, and then simulated the lighting performance while changing the lens-to-chip size ratio (LCR). It is found that with the decrease of LCR, the lighting performances of the three lenses are deteriorated and the illuminance uniformities are decreased. It is concluded that the robustness of point light source approximation in lens design is dependent on the lens and challenged for extended light source, especially for compact lens.
