Mosquitoes and their potential predators in rice agroecosystems of the Mekong Delta, southern Vietnam.

ABSTRACT Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Cx. gelidus, and Cx. quinquefasciatus, known vectors of Japanese encephalitis (JE), are distributed in rice agroecosystems in Asian countries. Very few integrated studies on the breeding habitats of rice-field mosquitoes, including JE vectors, have been conducted in Vietnam. We investigated the mosquito fauna and potential predators in 8 rice growing areas in the Mekong Delta region of southern Vietnam, during the wet and dry seasons of 2009. Mosquitoes and their predators were collected from a variety of aquatic habitats (rice fields, ponds, wetlands, shrimp ponds, ditches, canals, and rivers). We collected 936 Culex spp. (354 Cx. tritaeniorhynchus, 240 Cx. vishnui s.l., 189 Cx. fuscocephala, and 42 Cx. gelidus), 33 Uranotaenia, 25 Anopheles, and 9 Mimomyia (4 Mi. chamberlaini) in the dry season. During the rainy season, we collected 1,232 Culex spp. (132 Cx. vishnui s.l., 66 Cx. tritaeniorhynchus, 9 Cx. gelidus, 4 Cx. fuscocephala, and 2 Cx. bitaeniorhynchus), 236 Anopheles spp. (40 An. vagus and 1 An. sinensis), and 7 Uranotaenia (3 Ur. lateralis). Heteroptera such as Micronecta, Veliidae, and Pleidae were abundant and widely distributed in both seasons. Based on a stepwise generalized linear model, the abundance of mosquitoes and their predators in rice fields was high when the rice plant length was short and water depth was shallow. Therefore, the use of insecticides during the earlier stages of rice growth should be avoided in order to preserve the predator populations.

  • Article: Japanese encephalitis virus in Bangkok: factors influencing vector infections in three suburban communities.

    ABSTRACT: An unexpected outbreak of Japanese encephalitis (JE) in Bangkok in 1985 led us to investigate the vector ecology of urban JE from January 1986 to June 1987 at three suburban sites that displayed a wide range of factors imputed to influence JE transmission. Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles and Cx. gelidus Theobald, suspected vectors, comprised 71-96% of all mosquitoes collected by CO2-baited CDC traps at the three sites. Mean of mosquito abundance per two trap-nights per month ranged from 28 to 5,728 mosquitoes at the sites of lowest and highest abundance, respectively. Cx. tritaeniorhynchus yielded more JE isolates (n = 16) than Cx. gelidus (n = 7), but the minimum infection rates of the two species (number of JE isolates per 1,000 mosquitoes tested; MIR, 0.17 and 0.47, respectively) were comparable and covaried with vector abundance. Moreover, the proportion of sentinel pigs that had JE antibodies generally increased proportionately with vector abundance at the sites. Vector abundance was high in monsoon (May-October), moderate in transition (March-April and November-December), and low in dry (January-February) seasons. Mosquitoes collected in monsoon seasons yielded 96% of the JE isolates, whereas 4 and 0% of the isolates were obtained from transition and dry season collections, respectively. More pigs seroconverted in monsoon and transition seasons than in dry seasons. Indices of JE transmission activity (vector abundance, pig seroconversions, and MIRs) increased proportionately with rainfall. Despite higher indices at the site of greatest vector abundance than elsewhere, the risk of human infection appeared greatest at the site with moderate vector abundance because of its greatest human population density.

    ABSTRACT: Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and Nile perch (Lates niloticus) samples were collected from fish landing stations in nine riparian districts on the Tanzanian side of Lake Victoria and screened for residues of 64 organochlorine, organophosphorus, carbamate, and pyrethroid pesticides. The residue levels in the fish fillet were up to 0.003, 0.03 and 0.2 mg/kg fresh weight (0.7, 3.8 and 42 mg/kg lipid weight) of fenitrothion, DDT and endosulfan, respectively. Mean levels within sites were up to 0.002, 0.02 and 0.1 mg/kg fresh weight (0.5, 0.5 and 16 mg/kg lipid weight), respectively. The detection of higher levels of p,p'-DDT than the degradation products (p,p'-DDD and p,p'-DDE), and higher levels of endosulfan isomers (alpha and beta) than the sulphate, in fish samples, implied recent exposure of fish to DDT and endosulfan, respectively. Generally, most of the fish samples had residue levels above the average method detection limits (MDLs), but were within the calculated ADI.
