    ABSTRACT: We describe recent work enabling fast handovers and context transfer between access routers offering Internet connectivity for mobile (often wireless) nodes. We present our framework for engineering general context transfer solutions, and a protocol which uses the framework to provide a simple yet general mechanism for carrying out context transfers during handovers. Since our mechanism operates at the network level, we expect that it will be the most expedient way to provide for seamless handovers between heterogeneous networks. We report our results which show that fast handovers with context transfer at the network layer can support uninterrupted voice over IP (VoIP). Thus, our context transfer framework will catalyze the arrival of a unified wireless telecommunications network, with voice and data connectivity anytime, anywhere. Towards that end, we describe how our results and context transfer framework relate to other work within the IETF.

    ABSTRACT: IP version 6 #IPv6# is being designed within the IETF as a replacement for the currentversion of the IP protocol used in the Internet #IPv4#. Wehave designed protocol enhancements for IPv6, known as Mobile IPv6, that allow transparent routing of IPv6 packets to mobile nodes, taking advantage of the opportunities made possible by the design of a new version of IP.InMobile IPv6, each mobile node is always identi#ed by its home address, regardless of its current point of attachment to the Internet. While away from its home IP subnet, a mobile node is also associated with a careof address, which indicates the mobile node's current location. Mobile IPv6 enables any IPv6 node to learn and cache the care-of address associated with a mobile node's home address, and then to send packets destined for the mobile node directly to it at this care-of address using an IPv6 Routing header.

    ABSTRACT: The mobile IP (MIP) protocol for IP version 4 as being standardized by the Internet community provides continuous Internet connectivity to mobile hosts, without requiring any changes to existing routers and higher-layer applications. We propose an alternative protocol, mobile IP with location registers (MIP-LR) which is closer to the “service node” database approach used in the public switched telephone network (PSTN): before launching a packet to the mobile host, the sender first queries a database to obtain the recipient's current location. MIP-LR is designed for operation in enterprise environments or within logical administrative domains, as it requires a sending host to be aware of which hosts are potentially mobile and implement the MIP-LR protocol. The benefits of MIP-LR are that potentially long routes, called “triangle routes”, from the sender to the mobile host are avoided, encapsulation of packets sent to a mobile host is not required, the load on the home network as well as the home and foreign agents is reduced, and there is substantially improved interoperability with protocols such as RSVP for providing QoS guarantees. We carry out a simplified average-case analysis of the costs and benefits of MIP-LR and show it can result in significant reductions in mean network costs compared to MIP
