ABSTRACT Kurzfassung. In dieser Studie wurde untersucht ob in einem typischen OP-Aufbau mit dem da Vincir Telemanipulator elektromagnetisches Tracking fur die Realisation eines Navigationssystems eingesetzt werden kann. Hierfur wurde in einem realen OP-Aufbau untersucht, wie stark metallische und ferromagnetisch wirksame Objekte wie Operationstisch und Telemanipulator das elektromagnetische Feld des Trackingsystems beeinflussen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass der Telemanipulator nur unwe- sentlich die Storung des Magnetfeldes durch den OP-Tisch verstarkt. Ins- besondere die Bewegung der Instrumente im Trackingvolumen verursach- te keine zusatzliche relevante Storung des Magnetfeldes. Bei Begrenzung des Trackingvolumens auf eine Lange von 190 mm, Hohe von 200mm und Breite von 400 mm war der maximale Fehler in diesem Bereich an allen Messpunkten kleiner 10 mm. Der Einsatz von elektromagnetischem Tracking f¨ ur die Navigation mit dem da Vincir Surgical System ist so- mit in einem begrenzten Arbeitsvolumen mit hinreichender Genauigkeit moglich.

    ABSTRACT: Many computer-assisted surgery applications use electromagnetic tracking devices and several sources of interference may reduce the accuracy of this type of system in clinical situations. This study aims to quantify interference sources in an operating room (OR) and determine if their impact on the tracking system is excessive for applications requiring millimetric accuracy. Electromagnetic noise levels were measured in a controlled environment and compared with measurements in an OR. Errors generated by this noise remained below the 0.15mm RMS level. OR equipment was also brought in proximity to the electromagnetic receivers and the errors generated by the ensuing interference were measured. Ferromagnetic and electrical devices can produce large interference (translation errors up to 8.4mm RMS and rotation up to 166 degrees ). However, these devices can be identified and placed at sufficient distances to decrease the magnitude of their interference. In conclusion, in the absence of significant ferromagnetic or electromagnetic distortion caused by equipment often present in an OR, this electromagnetic tracking system provides valid relative measurements with millimetric accuracy to computer-assisted surgical applications. This distortion can be reduced by maximizing the distances to the interfering OR equipment and integrating noise-reducing algorithms in associated software.

    ABSTRACT: Dieser Beitrag behandelt die Entwicklung eines Navigationssystems für die telemanipulatorgestützte Oesophagektomie (Speiseröhrenentfernung) unter besonderer Betrachtung des Patiententracking. Durch eine Visualisierung von Risikostrukturen anhand eines präoperativen CTs und der optisch getrackten Instrumentenspitze des Telemanipulators soll dem Chirurgen eine bessere Orientierung im Thorax ermöglicht werden. Dies wird durch ein optisches Tracking des Instruments und durch eine Vorrichtung zur Immobilisierung Patienten erreicht.

    ABSTRACT: Electromagnetic tracking systems have found increasing use in medical applications during the last few years. As with most non-trivial spatial measurement systems, the complex determination of positions and orientations from their underlying raw sensor measurements results in complicated, non-uniform error distributions over the specified measurement volume. This makes it difficult to unambiguously determine accuracy and performance assessments that allow users to judge the suitability of these systems for their particular needs. Various assessment protocols generally emphasize different measurement aspects that typically arise in clinical use. This can easily lead to inconclusive or even contradictory conclusions. We examine some of the major issues involved and discuss three useful calibration protocols. The measurement accuracy of a system can be described in terms of its 'trueness' and its 'precision'. Often, the two are strongly coupled and cannot be easily determined independently. We present a method that allows the two to be disentangled, so that the resultant trueness properly represents the systematic, non-reducible part of the measurement error, and the resultant precision (or repeatability) represents only the statistical, reducible part. Although the discussion is given largely within the context of electromagnetic tracking systems, many of the results are applicable to measurement systems in general.
