ABSTRACT Business Process Management (BPM) has gained remarkable importance in research and practice in the last years. Innovative information and communication technology (ICT) is a driver for the effectiveness and efficiency of enterprise collabo- ration and the management of inter-organizational business pro- cesses. In this context, cooperating enterprises need a shared understanding of their own processes, those of their partners as well as of emerging inter-organizational process structures. In order to create such a shared understanding, the concept of collaborative modeling can serve as a useful approach. This article introduces a concept for collaborative business process modeling and its implementation in the CoMoMod tool. The tool supports several aspects of collaborative process modeling, such as simultaneous work of spatially distributed modelers on one process model diagram. Furthermore the tool permits synchro- nously creating a collaborative model with different modeling languages by automatically mapping and converting the different model representations. The proof of concept utilizes Event-driven Process Chains (EPC) and Petri Nets. The usage of an integrated chat messaging service supports communication during the pro- cess of collaboratively modeling business processes.

    ABSTRACT: This paper presents an approach to increase the value gained from enterprise modeling activities in an organization. The main objective of the approach is to facilitate communication and coordination of modeling initiatives between stakeholders and within and across projects. The approach as a normative process model is presented and discussed in the context of case projects and activities, and we conclude that although work remains both on sophistication of the approach and on validation of its general applicability and value, our results show that it addresses recognized challenges in a useful way.

    ABSTRACT: Modeling is a key activity in conceptual design and system design. Users as well as stakeholders, experts and entrepreneurs need to be able to create shared understanding about a system representation. In this paper we conducted a literature review to provide an overview of studies in which collaborative modeling efforts have been conducted to give first insights in the challenges of collaborative modeling, specifically with respect to group composition, collaboration & participation methods, modeling methods and quality in collaborative modeling. We found a critical challenge in dealing with the lack of modeling skills, such as having a modeler to support the group, or create the model for the group versus training to empower participants to actively participate in the modeling effort, and another critical challenge in resolving conflicting (parts of) models and integration of submodels or models from different perspectives. The overview of challenges presented in this paper will inspire the design of methods and support systems that will ultimately advance the efficiency and effectiveness of collaborative modeling tasks.

    ABSTRACT: Heterogeneous and proprietary interchange formats pose a major problem for business process management. This applies in particular to processes that have been modelled as Event-Driven Process Chains (EPCs). This paper addresses het- erogeneous representations of EPCs. We take ARIS Markup Language (AML)1, the proprietary interchange format of ARIS Toolset, as a starting point and discuss its ad- vantages and shortcomings. Afterwards, we propose a mapping from AML to EPC Markup Language (EPML) and discuss the implementation of these mappings as a XSLT transformation program. The mappings reveal that all major AML elements can be transformed to similar EPML elements. Furthermore, the XSLT program makes EPC models managed by ARIS Toolset available in EPML format.
