Knowledge Management and Acquisition in Digital Repositories - A Semantic Web Perspective.

ABSTRACT Information management, description and discovery, as they are today implemented in digital repositories and digital libraries systems, can surely benefit from the stack of Semantic Web technologies. Most importantly, the ability to infer implied information over declared facts and assertions, based on their rich descriptions and associations, can span new possibilities in how stored assets can be accessed, searched and discovered. In this paper we propose a process and implementation that provides for inference-based knowledge discovery, retrieval and navigation on top of digital repositories, based on existing metadata and other semi-structured information. We show that it is possible to produce added-value and meaningful results even when existing descriptions are only flatly organized and we achieve this with little manual intervention. Our work and results are based on real-world data and applied on the official University of Patras institutional repository that is based on DSpace.

    ABSTRACT: Since achieving W3C recommendation status in 2004, the Web Ontology Language (OWL) has been successfully applied to many problems in computer science. Practical experience with OWL has been quite positive in general; however, it has also revealed room for improvement in several areas. We systematically analyze the identified shortcomings of OWL, such as expressivity issues, problems with its syntaxes, and deficiencies in the definition of OWL species. Furthermore, we present an overview of OWL 2—an extension to and revision of OWL that is currently being developed within the W3C OWL Working Group. Many aspects of OWL have been thoroughly reengineered in OWL 2, thus producing a robust platform for future development of the language.

    ABSTRACT: The authors, who jointly serve as Open Archives Initiative (OAI) Executive, reflect on the three-year history of the OAI. Three years of technical work recently culminated in the release of a stable production version 2 of the OAI Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). This technical product, the work that led up to it, and the process that made it possible have attracted some favor from the digital library and information community. The paper explores a number of factors in the history of the OAI that the authors believe have contributed to this positive response. The factors include focus on a defined problem statement, an operational model in which strong leadership is balanced with solicited participation, a healthy dose of community building and support, and sensible technical decisions.

    ABSTRACT: The recent advent of the Semantic Web has given rise to the need for efficient and sound methods that would provide reasoning support over the knowledge scattered on the Internet. Description Logics and DL-based infer-ence engines in particular play a significant role towards this goal, as they seem to have overlapping expressivity with the Semantic Web de facto language, OWL. In this paper we argue that DLs currently constitute one of the most tempting available formalisms to support reasoning with OWL. Further, we present and survey a number of DL based systems that could be used for this task. Around one of them (Racer) we build our Knowledge Discovery Interface, a web application that can be used to pose intelligent queries to Semantic Web documents in an intuitive manner. As a proof of concept, we then apply the KDI on the CIDOC-CRM reference ontology and discuss our results.
