Hallux sesamoid osteonecrosis associated to ballet. Literature review

ABSTRACT The hallucal sesamoid complex plays a vital role in normal
weightbearing, gait and foot biomechanics. Dancers, particularly ballet
dancers, place the metatarsophalangeal joint and the hallucal sesamoids
to extreme stress and are, therefore, especially prone to their lesion. We
present a literature review on dance related sesamoid injuries, their
causes, pathophysiology, diagnostic methods and treatment.
