Oil content analysis: myths and reality

ABSTRACT This chapter examines the techniques and apparatus associated with the reference method for oil content extraction. It also provides information on the composition of the oil extracted by the reference method, and this provides a benchmark for studies using alternative techniques. Some comparisons with other methodologies are provided, particularly the AOAC method commonly used for food labelling and the AOCS SFE method. The relation between results from the reference method and the efficiency of commercial extraction is also discussed.

    ABSTRACT: For calculation of phase equilibria of the system seed oil/CO2, an equation of state published in the literature has been fitted to experimental data of that system. The results thus obtained are of only limited use in designing a supercritical extraction process. The experimental investigation of the mass transfer kinetics is much more significant. Mechanical processing of the oil seed’s cell wall structure has been shown to be of great importance. The best specific yields were achieved with material that had been mechanically pre-deoiled and thereby broken open. Yields are increased considerably by use of the gas mixture CO2/propane or other special gas mixtures or by the addition of refrigerants. However, the extraction times achieved in batch operation, together with the mass product nature of oil seed, make a continuous supercritical extraction essential if operation is to become economic relative to the conventional hexane extraction. To this end, the energetics of the process have been calculated, and practical possibilities for continuous operation are discussed.

    ABSTRACT: The multisequential method for determination of oil content in oil seed developed at Svalöf has been used for ten years with good results. The mean values obtained in analysis of comparative samples of rape, turnip rape and white mustard for seven years in five countries with official methods agree well with the mean values from the multi-sequential method as used in four laboratories in Sweden. However, the variation coefficient is considerably smaller for the multisequential method. In addition to rape, turnip rape and white mustard, flaxseed, poppy seed, sunflower seed, safflower seed, soybeans and groundnuts can be successfully disintegrated in the steel tubes used in the multisequential method. The free fatty acid content of a rapeseed sample can be determined on the oil used for the gravimetric analysis.

    ABSTRACT: Three standard extraction procedures (FOSFA, IASC, ISO) for determining oil content were compared for 15 different oilseeds. Differences between results obtained using these three procedures were not statistically significant and repeatabilities were good. The general use of sand to aid microgrinding procedures and of an initial extraction period of 2 h only is recommended.
