[more] The ongoing prevalence and co-morbidity of behavior problems and learning disabilities highlight the importance of early evaluation in the prevention of these problems and some methodological issues. Based in a sample of 50 children with this co-morbidity, of both sexes, aged eight to 12 years, the present study compared results obtained by two instruments (IMHSC-Del-Prette and SSRS-BR) and two informants (children and teachers) showing acquisition and performance deficits of social skills (especially assertive and empathic skills), high frequency of behavior problems and biases between student and teacher evaluations. Implications of the findings in the analysis of educational special needs and in the planning of intervention programs for this population were discussed.

[more] This study aimed to verify the psychometric qualities of the Preschool and Kindergarten Behavior Scale (PKBS) for the Brazilian context. Subjects were parents and teachers of 143 children, between three and six years old, from two inner cities of the São Paulo (Brazil). The PKBS-BR has two forms, one for social skills and another for behavior problems. Parents and teachers individually completed the PKBS-BR. Factor analysis indicated a three factor structure for the social skills scale (Social Cooperation, Social Independence and Social Interaction) and two factors for the behavior problems scale (Externalizing and Internalizing problems). The factors explained, respectively, 45.38% and 42.12% of the data variance. The internal consistency measures were satisfactory, varying between 0.79 and 0.95. Some similarities and differences between American and Brazilian versions and the PKBS utility for research and psychological intervention are discussed.

[more] O presente estudo investigou a validade convergente do Sistema de Avaliação de Habilidades Sociais (SSRS-BR), em uma amostra de crianças brasileiras com deficiência mental, por meio da correlação entre as subescalas e escalas globais comuns aos formulários de autoavaliação e de avaliação pelos professores. Participaram 84 crianças com deficiência mental de uma escola especial e seus professores, que responderam ao SSRS-BR. Os resultados apontaram que na escala global de habilidades sociais e nas subescalas comuns, não houve correlação significativa entre os dois tipos de avaliadores. Além disso, os estudantes apresentaram uma tendência sistemática de se autoavaliaram mais negativamente em relação à avaliação dos professores. O estudo apontou para uma possível limitação na utilização do questionário de autoavaliação do SSRS-BR como instrumento único de avaliação no caso de crianças com deficiência mental. A pesquisa sugere ainda questões adicionais de cuidado no uso e comparação de resultados de diferentes informantes.

[more] This study carried out the analysis of the criterion validity of the Brazilian version of the Social Skills Rating System (SSRS-BR). The results of a sample of 84 children with mental disability were compared with a sample of 496 children with typical development. The children and their teachers evaluated social skills, behavior problems and academic competence using the SSRS-BR. In all global scales and in most subscales the instruments of self-evaluation and evaluations done by teachers were sensitive to, significantly, differentiate children with and without mental disability in the constructs measured by the SSRS-BR. This study provides the instrument for future researches as well as for the development of evaluation procedures and intervention programs for children with mental disability.

[more] This paper describes a Parental Social Skills Program aimed to reduce children behavior problems. The program, lasting 11 weeks, was implemented by means of weekly sequential steps starting with behavior analysis principles for parents to practice a non-coercitive discipline and to learn, models of parental social skills. Parents received weekly home assignments to observe the children's behavior, to establish favorable learning conditions for children to behave in desirable ways (empathy, compliance, independence etc.) and to adequately express emotions. Thirty-two mothers and two fathers participated in the program. Self-report questionnaires and open interviews in the pre-and post-intervention phases were used to assess the program's efficacy. Results showed significant reduction in the frequency and severity of disruptive and/or noncompliant behavior, as assessed by the parents. In conclusion, the approach of educational social abilities for parents may contribute positively to the development of non-coercitive disciplinary practices.

[more] Social skills occurring in a high frequency and low variability can be taken as patterns, suggesting cultural or sub-cultural features which are important when selecting instruments for evaluation and planning interventions. This research aimed to characterize the social skills repertoire among Psychology students from 4 Brazilian places: São Paulo (SP), Bahia (BA), Minas Gerais (MG)e Rio de Janeiro (RJ), also examining their differences and the influence of sex and age on their patterns. Five hundred sixty four Psychology undergraduates completed a self-report inventory (IHS-del-Prette) with a structure of 5 factors: F1) coping and assertion; F2) expressing positive affection; F3) talking and self-confidence; F4) dealing with unknown people and new situations; F5) aggressiveness self-control. The samples were compared considering general (GS) and factorial (F1, F2, F3, F4 e F5) scores as well as sex and age influence in each one (ANOVA, followed by t or Scheffé test). The results showed that: a) Psychology students presented higher scores than normative sample in the GS, F1, F3 and F4 and lower in the F2 and F5, but sex differences were similar to the normative pattern; b) place, sex and age significantly affected the scores, with place-sex and place-age interactions; c) samples from MG, BA, RJ and SP presented similar profiles, with higher values for RJ in the F1 and for MG and SP in the F2 and F5; d) students from BA presented the highest sex differences and from RJ the lowest ones; e) age differences occurred in the F4 (favorable to younger students for SP) and in the F5 (favorable to older ones for BA and RJ). The meaning of these differences and similarities are discussed as well as some explanatory hypotheses and questions for further studies.

    As crianças e adolescentes em situação de rua apresentam valores e expectativas que podem ou não ser coerentes com suas estratégias de sobrevivência. Estas estratégias, por sua vez, ocorrem usualmente via interações sociais, possivelmente requerendo um elaborado repertório de habilidades interpessoa... [more] As crianças e adolescentes em situação de rua apresentam valores e expectativas que podem ou não ser coerentes com suas estratégias de sobrevivência. Estas estratégias, por sua vez, ocorrem usualmente via interações sociais, possivelmente requerendo um elaborado repertório de habilidades interpessoais. O presente estudo investiga os valores, crenças e habilidades interpessoais junto a vinte e oito meninos nas ruas da cidade de São Carlos (SP). As informações foram coletadas por meio de conversas informais, entrevistas estruturadas e aplicação de um inventário de habilidades sociais. No caso deste último, efetuou-se um levantamento de freqüência dos comportamentos que então apresentados em tabelas. Os demais dados foram submetidos a uma análise de conteúdo. Os resultados mostraram que: a) a rua é utilizada como local de trabalho mais do que como moradia; b) as atividades realizadas pelas crianças requerem habilidades interpessoais, sendo mais freqüentes aquelas relacionadas à defesa de direitos, negociação e recusa; e, c) as crianças identificam valores e condutas socialmente valorizados, estabelecendo uma ética própria e apresentando desejos de ascensão social e de superação da situação em que se encontram. Discute-se a relação entre a realidade cotidiana dessa população, suas expectativas, valores e habilidades sociais para enfrentar essa realidade e os direitos previstos pelo Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente.

[more] This study analyzed the influence of mothers and fathers� empathy and their rearing procedures on preschool boys� prosocial and empathic repertoire. The boys, four to five years old, composed two contrasting groups: 11 highly empathic (GME) and 11 lowly empathic (GPE). Parents� empathy was assessed by questionnaire and their rearing procedures were evaluated in an interview and a structured �waiting room� situation, recorded in VHS, where it was created demands for educative behaviors. After a content and categorizing analysis, classes occurrence were tabulated and converted in scores which allowed statistic comparison between groups (Mann-Witney, p<0.05) and fathers versus mothers (Kruskal- Wallis, p<0.05). Results showed favorable differences for GME, with parents� scores greater than mothers� on requesting, empathy and support classes. Research and practical implications of these results are discussed. Este estudo analisa a influência da empatia e procedimentos educativos de pais e mães sobre o repertório pró-social e empático de meninos pré-escolares que constituíram dois grupos contrastantes: 11 muito empáticos (GME) e 11 pouco empáticos (GPE), com idade de quatro a cinco anos. A empatia dos pais foi aferida por questionário e os procedimentos por entrevista e por registro, em vídeo, de comportamentos educativos em situação estruturada de �sala de espera�, onde foram criadas demandas para comportamentos educativos. Efetuou-se análise de conteúdo, categorização e tabulação de ocorrência dos relatos e registros que foram transformados em escores, permitindo comparação estatística entre os grupos (Mann-Witney, p<0.05) e entre pais e mães (Kruskal-Wallis, p<0.05). Os resultados mostraram diferenças favoráveis aos pais GME nos escores de exigência, empatia e suporte e maior empatia dos pais GME, mas não das mães. São discutidas as implicações práticas e de pesquisa desses resultados.
