[more] This is the first comprehensive review to examine the role of the central European invasion corridor on fish introductions into Belarusian and Polish inland waters (Dnieper-Bug-Vistula-Oder-Elbe-Spree-Havel). Historical and recent data were assessed,including the results of a 2003 - 2008 survey along the Belarusian and Polish sections of the corridor. Since the eighteenth century, at least six fish species of Ponto-Caspian origin have spread via the corridor and migrated westwards to the Baltic basin, with five species found in recent surveys, namely the monkey goby Neogobius fluviatilis, round goby N. melanostomus, racer goby N. gymnotrachelus, tubenose goby Proterorhinus marmoratus and the white eye-bream Abramis sapa.

Comparative Analysis of Two Approaches to the Assessment of Water Quality by Biological Indices: Case Study of Dnepr Tributaries

[more] Water quality in several tributaries of the Dnepr in the southeastern part of its basin in the territory of the Republic of Belarus was estimated by six biotic indices and by the comparison with reference sections as accepted in the European Water Framework Directive. Water quality estimates obtained by different indices for the same sections are significantly different. The most adequate estimates were obtained from the British and Belgian indices for the assessment of the state of flowing waters. The comparative analysis of the two approaches showed that the method based on reference sections yields a more stringent estimate of river water quality than biotic indices.

Assessing the risks of aquatic species invasions via European inland waterways: from concepts to environmental indicators.

Over the past century, the potential for aquatic species to expand their ranges in Europe has been enhanced both as a result of the construction of new canals and because of increased international trade. A complex network of inland waterways now connects some previously isolated catchments in south... [more] Over the past century, the potential for aquatic species to expand their ranges in Europe has been enhanced both as a result of the construction of new canals and because of increased international trade. A complex network of inland waterways now connects some previously isolated catchments in southern (Caspian, Azov, Black, Mediterranean seas) and northern (Baltic, North, Wadden, White seas) Europe, and these waterways act as corridors for nonnative species invasions. We have developed a conceptual risk assessment model for invasive alien species introductions via European inland waterways, with specific protocols that focus on the development of environmental indicators within the socioeconomic context of the driving forces-pressures-state-impact-response framework. The risk assessment protocols and water quality indicators on alien species were tested for selected ecosystems within 3 main European invasion corridors, and these can be recommended for application as part of the Common Implementation Strategy of the European Commission Water Framework Directive, which aims to provide a holistic risk-based management of European river basins. The conceptual structure of the online Risk Assessment Toolkit for aquatic invasive alien species is provided and includes 3 main interlinked components: online risk assessment protocols, an early warning system, and an information transmitter for risk communication to end users.

The state and water quality of small rivers in Belarus: the case study of the Dnieper river basin

[more] For the assessment of ecological water quality in small rivers of the south-western part of the basin of the River Dnieper on the territory of Belarus the integrated approach was implemented based on hydrological, hydro-chemical and biological data. The rivers overflow has been determined as the main factor triggering the inflow of the water seeping from mires and also the pollution of the watershed that has led to decrease of the pH level, change in the color of the water, and also higher concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus in the water. The water quality was assessed on the basis of species diversity, the amount of sensitive macro-invertebrate community species as well as the biotic indices. In most of the cases, the water quality could be defined as "good" or "very good". The indicated river reference sites were selected on the basis of the integrated (common) analysis of abiotic and biotic characteristics. It is clear that the most credible information on water quality could be obtained only on the basis of an approach which includes abiotic and biotic components.

[more] Comparative analysis of six indices (TBI, FBI, BMWP, ASPPT, BBI, and EPT) was performed at nine sites in the Berezina River basin in the area of the Berezina Biospheric Reserve. The criterion for comparison was the coefficient of variations of an index for different sites in the same time moment and for the same site in different periods. The indices TBI, BMWP, and EPT were found to demonstrate the highest sensitivity and most adequate response to variations in water quality, which allows them to be recommended to be taken as standard.

[more] Climate change and biological invasions are key processes affecting global biodiversity, yet their effects have usually been considered separately. Here, we emphasise that global warming has enabled alien species to expand into regions in which they previously could not survive and reproduce. Based on a review of climate-mediated biological invasions of plants, invertebrates, fishes and birds, we discuss the ways in which climate change influences biological invasions. We emphasise the role of alien species in a more dynamic context of shifting species’ ranges and changing communities. Under these circumstances, management practices regarding the occurrence of ‘new’ species could range from complete eradication to tolerance and even consideration of the ‘new’ species as an enrichment of local biodiversity and key elements to maintain ecosystem services.
