Plasma Membrane Ca2+ ATPase-4 (PMCA4) splice variant ratios (P4a:P4b) impact cell cycle in Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells (VSMC). Quiescent VSMC (P4a=P4b) start proliferating (high P4b, low P4a) after vessel injury. This VSMC Phenotypic Switching underlies several vascular disease states. I want to unravel the signaling controlling PMCA4 alternative splicing and the PMCA4b triggered pathway which starts the VSMC Cell Cycle. PMCA4 KO causes VSMC G1 arrest [reported in my 2014 J Biol Chem article].
