Plasma Membrane Ca2+ ATPase-4 (PMCA4) splice variant ratios impact the VSMC or Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Cycle. Vessel injury causes medial wall VSMC (4a=4b) to start proliferating (high 4b, low 4a) while deleting PMCA4 gene causes G1 arrest [reported in my 2014 J Biol Chem article]. This VSMC Phenotypic Switching underlies several vascular disease states. I want to unravel the signaling controlling PMCA4 alternative splicing and the PMCA4b triggered pathway which starts the VSMC Cell Cycle.
