Pynchon alludes to the ambiguity of personal perspective which is dismembered by means of visions of violence and exploitation. Pynchon shows us how little control we have over our bodies and how the horror that surrounds us, wars, diseases, crises, leads us to paranoia, doubt and confusion. We suffer from constant pain which leads to omnipresent ugliness and disgust. The border between the beautiful and the ugly vanishes in Lot 49 and gives us the entropic uniformness of landscape, life, emotion. The world becomes the same. People become the same. They co-exist with material objects in the process of constant interconnection. Pynchon's cars become people and vice versa. This pre-digitality of his oeuvre helped me to see the technological sublime in the on-line world of ours.Following

[more]In order to understand postmodern American fiction, you should definetely read a couple of essays by Lyotard concerning his outlook on the metanarrative. In order to understand Pynchon's 49 try to take a closer look at the notion of entropy and paranoia in the 20th c. American literature. Tony Tanner's essay entitled ''Entropy'' should be quite exhaustive. As for the starter, I suggest Coover's ''The Babysitter,'' Doctorow's ''Welcome to Hard Times,'' Bartheleme's ''Snow White'' and Auster's ''Oracle Night,'' or Barth's ''The Nigh-Sea Journey'' Should you have any questions, feel free to contact me priv.Following
