I don't feel able to add much to the thoughts shared above, but I would like to reflect on how we measure knowledge. I think the way we measure things is incredibly important if we wish to generate a rational element to our arguments in support of something like KM. My point being, if we can measure elements of knowledge (beyond e.g. numbers of communications) related to the capabilities of groups of individuals (communities) and the results of that knowledge in terms of benefit to the organisation, then we are in a better position to demonstrate Knowledge Management to others. I hope this thought compliments those of others. Kind regards, RobinFollowing

Yes it seems access to working capital is high up there... and I was interested in the notes on 'ability to provide customers with a competitive price'... What might be the 'root cause' of this? I would reflect on: pressure to take significant profits early, and that this may be linked to conditions under which capital has been lent, and/or the sums paid internally. Do others have similar thoughts?Following

[more]This may not be a very scientific observation, being based on reading a few autobiographies of entrepreneurs... in particular that of Richard Branson recently, the owners of start ups may not be positive and proactive enough in marketing and promoting their product or service. This observation probably lines up with Julian's point number 1, and the fear or lack of confidence the owners might have when seeking funding implied in Thomas comments. I actually see coporate governance as a potential bureaucratic drag on a new business in its early stages of life. Do my thoughts make sense? Regards, RobinFollowing

You are clearly gathering thoughts from these notes and seeing levels / patterns and trying to do something valuable with them! :-) Thoughts arising about the process of theory development follow: 1. If Value Creation is a process, what are the steps constituting that process? it may help do describe the theory as a sequence of events that are generalised sufficiently to help understanding in principle, but clear enough to be applied in a specific situation?? 2. And reflecting on your notes a little further... if it is not immediately possible to write a sequence of steps, it might be possible to draw concentric circles into which elements of value creation fit. This might be a picture that helps move towards more satisfactory process steps over time?? 3. Finally, as my mind works better with pictures than words sometimes, I wonder whether it is possible to share a diagram based e.g. on powerpoint on this forum?? Regards RobinFollowing
