Article: Imaging findings of colonic wall redundancy in cystic fibrosis patients: two case reports.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Colonic wall redundancy (CWR) is a condition often seen in adult cystic fibrosis patients, but the imaging features of this condition are poorly described in the literature. Recognizing the radiological presentation of CWR is important because this condition can be confused with acute or acquired colonic diseases that can require specific treatment. We present two cases of CWR evaluated with ultrasound, 64-multidetector CT scan, and magnetic resonance.Abdominal Imaging 08/2012; 37(4):566-9. · 1.73 Impact Factor -
Article: Inhaled surfactant in the treatment of accidental talc powder inhalation: a new case report.
Federico Matina, Mirella Collura, Maria Cristina Maggio, Patrizio Vitulo, Caterina Lo Piparo, Giovanni Corsello[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The use of talcum powder is incorrectly part of the traditional care of infants. Its acute aspiration is a very dangerous condition in childhood. Although the use of baby powder has been discouraged from many authors and the reports of its accidental inhalation have been ever more rare, sometimes new cases with several fatalities have been reported. We report on a patient in which accidental inhalation of baby powder induced severe respiratory difficulties. We also point out the benefits of surfactant administration. Surfactant contributed to the rapid improvement of the medical and radiological condition, preventing severe early and late complications and avoiding invasive approaches.Italian Journal of Pediatrics 09/2011; 37:47. -
Article: Thoracic complications following lung transplantation: 64-MDCT findings.
Settimo Caruso, Francesca Crino, Mariapina Milazzo, Patrizio Vitulo, Alessandro Bertani, Gianluca Marrone, Giuseppe Mamone, Luigi Maruzzelli, Roberto Miraglia, Vincenzo Carollo, Angelo Luca, Bruno Gridelli[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The aim of this review is to present the wide spectrum of common and uncommon thoracic complications that can affect the lung after transplantation. These complications were analyzed using 64 multi-detector row helical CT (MDCT). Sixty-four MDCT techniques and parameters are illustrated. Correlations of imaging findings and pathologic and histologic specimens obtained by transbronchial biopsy and broncoalveolar lavage are illustrated in representative cases.Clinical Transplantation 04/2011; 25(5):673-84. · 1.67 Impact Factor -

Article: The role of 1.5T cardiac MRI in the diagnosis, prognosis and management of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Gianluca Marrone, Giuseppe Mamone, Angelo Luca, Patrizio Vitulo, Alessandro Bertani, Michele Pilato, Bruno Gridelli[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Cardiovascular magnetic imaging is a noninvasive, three dimensional tomographic technique that allows for a detailed morphology of the cardiac chambers, the accurate quantification of right ventricle volumes, myocardial mass, and transvalvular flow. It can also determine whether right ventricular diastolic function is impaired through pulmonary hypertension. The aim of this article is to review the main kinetic, morphological and functional changes of the right ventricle that can occur in patients affected by pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and to assess how the MRI findings can influence the prognosis, and guide the decision-making strategy. In those cases in which MRI shows a significant cardiac diastolic dysfunction, the prognosis is predictive of pharmacological treatment failure, and mortality. This leaves double lung-heart transplantation as the only therapeutic option. The coexistence of PAH and left ventricle impairment causes worse right ventricle function, leads to a poor prognosis, and may change the therapeutic strategies (for example, PAH associated with left ventricle dysfunction may require a double lung-heart transplant). The international journal of cardiovascular imaging 03/2010; 26(6):665-81. · 2.15 Impact Factor -
Article: Cirsoid aneurysm of coronary arteries associated with arterioventricular fistula evaluated by 64-multidetector CT coronary angiography: depiction of a case.

ABSTRACT: A female patient with severe pulmonary hypertension was admitted for lung transplant evaluation. As an incidental finding, the chest CT showed diffuse and dilated coronaries, not detected at previous echocardiography. A coronary CT angiography was then performed using a 64-multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) scanner to better evaluate the coronary tree. The images obtained after postprocessing demonstrated tremendously aneurysmatic and tortuous coronary arteries and the presence of a septal branch deepening into the myocardium and penetrating the right ventricle cavity, forming an abnormal arterioventricular fistula. A causal relation between the aneurysms and the fistula is suspected.CardioVascular and Interventional Radiology 09/2008; 32(3):539-42. · 2.09 Impact Factor
