As a sociocultural anthropologist/researcher I have an interest in the Dodecanese islands (especially Rhodes) in the Aegean and more recently the Society Islands (especially Tahiti) in the South Pacific and hope to further develop research about these islands. Interested in the study of islands and teaching about the culture of islands. As an educator/teacher I chose to employ the constructivist as opposed to the instructivist approach as my preferred teaching method for my students.

[more] This paper is an ethnographic portrayal of Greek and Ukrainian cross-cultural children in Melbourne at an age where marriage is a topic of discussion between parents and children, when ethnic traditions are discussed, comparing the views and expectations of these two ethnic cultures. Parents mention their pre-migration experiences of marriage, also encompassing their parents’ life stories. Marriage, as a rite of passage, is explained through the theory of Arnold van Gennep.

[more] Th is paper is both introduction to and review of sociological insights that have contributed to understanding social dynamics that give defi nition to the social modelling of the Greek family in Australia. Th e paper concentrates on fi rst generatio Greek-born migrants and their children. It will explain the use of network analysis that has been researched for the Greek community in Australia. Network analysis will then be compared to systems theory. The comparison favours the relevance of network analysis in making social sense of migrant family structure in Australia.

The Sousta in the Aegean

In the Aegean, the σούστα has been a dance of Greek island peoples, especially for those of the southern Aegean: the Dodecanese islands and Crete. This paper discusses the possible origins of the σούστα and locates it in the types of dances of the wider Aegean region. The paper is also an ethnographic exploration, the result of ethnographic fieldwork on a Dodecanesian island, Rhodes, constructing a picture of a local σούστα dance in a southern village of the island. The importance of the dance, it seems, was that it was a dance of love and an essential part of courtship which expressed the honour of love in the wedding ritual. This local variant of σούστα is not performed any more in the village. In this paper I will discuss how dance performances are involved in the definition of gender roles and in the construction of honourable love and courtship.
