  Really interesting discussion of this matter. I'm currently working on a qual study within an RCT - three treatment arms (psychological interventions with adolescent depression), and three time-points (baseline, end of treatment, one year follow-up), so very interesting to compare how you are approaching it. Although there is general agreement on the importance of purposive/theoretical sampling focused around your research aims, clearly the issue for you (and us) is that you are selecting your sample BEFORE you have some of the key information (such as who benefitted/didn't, dropped out etc.) which would be the basis for your purposive sampling! One option that you may want to explore (depends on funding, capacity etc.) is whether you can use retrospective sampling. In our study, we have built the baseline qualitative interview into the main RCT, so that ALL participants also take part. At the end of treatment we may then want to look, e.g. at those who have dropped out of treatment, and we are retrospectively sampling those people - who you could then interview at follow-up. Clearly it depends on resources, but in qualitative work it tends to be the analysis itself which is time-consuming, rather than the face-to-face interviewing per se. And perfectly 'legitimate' to sample retrospectively in a purposive way.
