Conference Proceeding: Reinterpreting the Functional Perspective: Are Reporting Clauses Non–Thematic?
Martin Drápela[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The article deals with the relationship between reporting clause and direct speech from the viewpoint of the theory of Functional Sentence Perspective (FSP)1. The author of the article attempts to show that the relationship between these two discourse units is of suprasentential nature and could be looked at differently from the traditional views offered in FSP analyses so far.2nd Triennial English Studies Conference, Budmerice, Slovakia; 01/2007 -
Article: K (ne)působení kontextu jako signálu aktuálního členění v novinových titulcích [On (non)applicability of context to the resolution of functional sentence pespective of newspaper headlines]
Martin Drápela[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The article discusses functional sentence prespective of newspaper headlines, which can be looked upon as contextually independent messages. Using examples from Czech online newscasters it is claimed, though, that situational context and context of experience do influence the production and reception of newspaper headlines.Sborník prací filozoficko-přídovědecké fakulty Slezské univerzity v Opavě. 01/2006; D4:5-11. -
Conference Proceeding: Determining salience of extralinguistic events
Martin Drápela[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The paper suggests that the framework of the theory of Functional Sentence Perspective can be used to determine the salience of extralinguistic events. Salience is viewed here as a phenomenon representing the part(s) of an extralinguistic event carrying high prominence in speaker’s/writer’s reminiscence of that event. It is further proposed that the identification of salience (or the most salient feature(s)) of an extralinguistic event is possible through functional (FSP) analysis of two or more accounts describing the event.Silesian Studies in English 2006 - International Conference of English and American Studies, Opava, Czech Republic; 01/2006 -
