[more]If you are planning to use a column packed with the activated carbon, you need to consider certain design parameters that need to be optimize for the best efficiency and the highest throughput at the lowest operating and capital costs. Such as pressure drop, particle diameter (Dcolumn, if possible), length and diameter (dparticle, if possible) of the column and flow rate (velocity). Firstly you should develop the process at lab scale with the right analysis method to identify your target components. Then you should study the efficiency of the column at different flow rates by measuring the HETP (Height to a Theoretical Plate) obtained from pulse experiments at lab scale by measuring the variance of the signal obtained at the outlet of the column. Once obtained the dependency of the HETP with the flow rate you will obtain the superficial velocity needed (and therefore flow rate) for the optimal performance (lower HETP). Further there are equations for optimizing the dparticle^2/L to obtain the highest throughput.Following
