[more] In the contemporary world of global business and continuously growing competition, organizations tend to use mergers and acquisitions to enforce their position on the market. The future organization’s design is a critical success factor in such undertakings. The field of social network analysis can enhance our uderstanding of these processes as it lets us reason about the development of networks, regardless of their origin. The analysis of mixing patterns is particularly useful as it provides an insight into how nodes in a network connect with each other. We hypothesize that organizational networks with compatible mixing patterns will be integrated more successfully. After conducting a simulation experiment, we suggest an integration model based on the analysis of network assortativity. The model can be a guideline for organizational integration, such as occurs in mergers and acquisitions.

[more] Biomimetics, the art and science of imitating nature and life for technological solutions is discussed from a modern organization theory perspective. The main hypothesis of this article is that there are common laws in nature that are applicable to living, social and likewise organizational systems. To take advantage of these laws, the study of nature’s principles for their application to organizations is proposed – a process which is in product and technology design known as bionic creativity engineering. In a search for most interesting concepts borrowed from nature we found amoeba organizations, the theory of autopoiesis or self-creation, neural networks, heterarchies, as well as fractals and bioteaming which are described and reviewed. Additionally other concepts like swarm intelligence, stigmergy, as well as genesis and reproduction, are introduced. In the end all these ideas are summarized and guidelines for further research are given.

The subject of a person's CM and age estimation is by itself insufficiently researched. Especially on the analysis of children's CM at different ages, because it hasn't been considered thoroughly. This paper will analyze certain characteristics of the CM and their changes during aging from a biometrics perspective, and will also give an overview of previous work on this subject.

[more] Scientific publishing almost hasn't changed for the last few centuries. Conferences and Journals are the only two ways to publish scientific information. On the other hand publishing technology has advanced from ordinary typography and it is ironic that scientific institutions, which should be the primers in using advanced technologies, still use traditional (often black and white) paper publishing. Today's Web interfaces to journals act mainly as digital archives of non-digital papers. Technology allows us to use multimedia systems, software applications, social and semantic web facilities that could tremendously improve publishing quality and allow for more scientific interaction. In order to show some of the possibilities of these new technologies, the TaOPis-system will be presented.

First the social network of CECIIS authors is visualized using the k-core decomposition algorithm and properly analyzed. Afterwards a keyword cloud based conceptual analysis of keywords grouped by conference year is provided and most important topics are identified. In the end four conceptual networks of keywords are presented (keywords connected through authors, sessions, chairmans and papers) an the differences are discussed.

[more] With all the efforts put into IT system security, the issue remains of what the level of such security is and how sure we are that our IT system is secure. The paper starts with the assumption that users are one of the most important components of IT system security, and an aware and trained user takes much more care about security in his daily activities. Such system will have less security incidents, which should reduce the possibility of infiltration by malevolent users or programs. Training is one of the mechanisms for affecting user behavior. The management of user training in the area of security is a demanding process. To implement is efficiently, we need information on training success evaluation. The paper proposes a training success evaluation model using fuzzy logic.

[more] A different approach to visualizing formalized knowledge on social semantic web applications is proposed and implemented in to the TaOPis system. A knowledge visualizer is build on top of the semantic wiki subsystem, using OWL based ontologies which are generated from user supplied meta-data. The application displays visual connections between classes and instances, as well as provides access to object properties and allows for visual search of related tags. Various use-cases are presented and analyzed which show that visual search has major advantages to formal niKlas-based querying.

[more] Social semantic Web or Web 3.0 application gained major attention from academia and industry in recent times. Such applications try to take advantage of user supplied meta data, using ideas from the semantic Web initiative, in order to provide better services. An open problem is the formalization of such meta data, due to its complex and often inconsistent nature. A possible solution to inconsistencies are string similarity metrics which are explained and analyzed. A study of performance and applicability in a frame logic environment is conducted on the case of agent reasoning about multiple domains in TaOPis - a social semantic Web application for self-organizing communities. Results show that the NYSIIS metric yields surprisingly good results on Croatian words and phrases.

In order to preserve the existing hierarchy of the standards, an emphasis is put on the mapping of Core Components elements to speci c constructs in OWL. The main purpose of developing an e-business standards' ontology is to create a foundation for an automated mapping system that would be able to convert concepts from various standards in an independent fashion. The practical applicability and veri cation of the presented mappings is tested on the mapping of Universal Business Language version 2.0 and Cross Industry Invoice version 2.0 to OWL.

[more] Autopoietic theory, a theory of complex, non- linear, autonomous and especially living systems, found its way from biology, through the social sciences to organization theory and information systems. It enjoys major attention from scientific audience in lots of different disciplines. Still there hasn't been enough effort to establish a common foundation for a new theory. There are often contradictions in the very essence of the theory which are outlined in this article. By using a more simplistic conceptualization of autopoiesis, we are trying to give guidelines for a new foundation in this area.

[more] The strong development of information and communication technology (ICT) as well as the fact that there are currently over 800 million on-line users worldwide, bring us to the position of rethinking carefully about where all this data is going. Sending and receiving secure data is a well known concept. But what about data in the "open space" where everyone who knows how and has adequate technology can intercept or eavedrop our data and use it against us, to harm us or our family or to destroy the organization where we working in. The traditional answer to these influences is the development of strong security mechanisms and systems which will be able to protect us (in most cases) from our self and from others as well. Such security systems have the possibility to monitor all communication between users in a specific network or subnet and collect all information exchanged between them. And this is what we see as the main problem. Someone who monitors the system has access to all information about the network's users and can take advantage of these data as he pleases. This means that someone always has full access to all private user data. Herein we introduce some ways of protecting users from legally monitoring of their private data.

Public Interfaces as the Result of Social Systems Structural Coupling

[more] Social systems are autopoietic (self-creating) systems which produce all their internal processes by them selves. When autopoietic systems interact with environmental (possibly allopoietic) systems the process of structural coupling takes place and there are possibilities that language will emerge. We analyze different public interfaces like wiki systems, forums, weblogs, social networks, tagging etc. to show how such interfaces can be seen as the result of structural coupling of social systems. We conclude that to facilitate citizen participation in on-line processes one needs to facilitate autopoiesis through various mechanisms. In the end we present the TaOPis system that we implemented which aims on solving the described issues.

The system uses the Flora-2 reasoning engine and supports the dynamic creation of queries in restricted Flora-2 syntax. We show how we were able to apply a simple tagging system in order to support the creation of an object oriented ontology. In the end we give a comparison between other semantic wiki systems and the developed system as well as give guidelines for future research.
