Research in the Kwan laboratory is aimed at understanding the developmental processes that underlie the assembly of neural circuits in the neocortex, their evolution during the emergence of higher cognition, and their dysregulation in human neurodevelopmental disorders. Our approach integrates: 1) genomic studies to identify candidate genes; 2) neurobiological characterization of mouse models and postmortem human brains; and 3) investigations of candidate pathways.
