  • Conference Proceeding: The Impact of Modern Science on Indonesian Young Muslim Students

ABSTRACT: One of the obstacles in fostering Islamic science in Indonesia tertiary education lies in the influence of Western-modern philosophy in shaping the mindset of young Muslim Indonesian students on Islam and its related aspects. The facts in front of us reveal that this influence has not only slowed down any attempt to promote the Islamic science in the region, but also has successfully installed a zero feeling or, worse, an antipathy towards the Islamic science itself. This situation should not be taken lightly for the failure in fostering Islamic science in this region will also have considerable impacts on the same project in its neighboring countries. This paper attempts to analyze the impacts of Western-modern philosophy on the mindset and way of life of young Muslim Indonesian students. The analysis will be based on the historical setting of Indonesian independence and the performance of its government under the leadership of president Soekarno down to Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as well as on its national system of education. In the process, this paper will be relied upon the ideas and thought confined in the conception of Islamization of contemporary knowledge articulated by the founder and ex-director of ISTAC, Dr. Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas.

ABSTRACT: This thesis deals with the concept of the Perfect Man in the thought of both Ibn 'Arabi (560/1165-638/1240) and Iqbal (1877-1938). The concepts of these two figures are analytically compared by way of their views of wujud, the evolutionary process of human being, qada' and qadar, and the classifications of the Perfect Man. In Ibn 'Arabi's system, these concepts are based on wahdah al-wujud and, in Iqbal's system, on his philosophy of Khudi. Although Iqbal criticized many aspects of Ibn 'Arabi's thought, this thesis will show that their concepts of the Perfect Man are quite similar, and that Iqbal was influenced in a number of important ways by Ibn 'Arabi.
