ABSTRACT: The use of environmental performance indicators (EPIs) and size effect: the case of industrial companies in Brazil Summary: Measure environmental performance effectively has been a challenge for organizations. One crucial aspect for accomplish that is the use of proper environmental performance indicators (EPIs). The aim of this paper is to analyze the use of environmental performance indicators by Brazilian industrial companies and to find out differences in the use of these indicators according to their nature or characteristics and according to the size of the respondent companies. The study has as its basis the EPIs proposed by GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) Guidelines and was conducted through a survey. The sample reached 149 companies in industrial sector in Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The main results suggest different uses for EPIs, with an emphasis on those more directly linked to the industrial productive processes and also differences in the use between small and large companies. ABSTRACT: This paper presents the results of empirical research conducted among 59 major Brazilian companies to verify whether the environmental management practices -one of the foundations of Sustainability the model TBL (Triple Bottom Line) -may influence the commercial success in competitive international market. The sample used consisted of Brazilian companies, most of them internationalized, and therefore it can be seen that the results reflects a reality that goes beyond the borders. Using a structural equation modeling technique it was possible to conclude that corporate environmental management integrated with R & D and marketing promotion provides an important link with export performance. Beyond these considerations, important discoveries in relation to other characteristics that may influence the competitiveness are also treated, as lack of support from senior management, the existence of a very low awareness about the importance of sustainability and also the existence of weak sustainability communication with internal and external stakeholders. The paper concludes with some recommendations for future research and for professionals.
