[more] Open Access (OA) is a model for publishing scholarly peer reviewed journals, made possible by the Internet. The full text of OA journals and articles can be freely read, as the publishing is funded through means other than subscriptions. Empirical research concerning the quantitative development of OA publishing has so far consisted of scattered individual studies providing brief snapshots, using varying methods and data sources. This study adopts a systematic method for studying the development of OA journals from their beginnings in the early 1990s until 2009. Because no comprehensive index of OA articles exists, systematic manual data collection from journal web sites was conducted based on journal-level data extracted from the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Due to the high number of journals registered in the DOAJ, almost 5000 at the time of the study, stratified random sampling was used. A separate sample of verified early pioneer OA journals was also studied. The results show a very rapid growth of OA publishing during the period 1993-2009. During the last year an estimated 191 000 articles were published in 4769 journals. Since the year 2000, the average annual growth rate has been 18% for the number of journals and 30% for the number of articles. This can be contrasted to the reported 3,5% yearly volume increase in journal publishing in general. In 2009 the share of articles in OA journals, of all peer reviewed journal articles, reached 7,7%. Overall, the results document a rapid growth in OA journal publishing over the last fifteen years. Based on the sampling results and qualitative data a division into three distinct periods is suggested: The Pioneering years (1993-1999), the Innovation years (2000-2004), and the Consolidation years (2005-2009).

[more] The research process plays a central role in science. To support research and researchers, it is necessary to understand the research process and its phases. Although the literature offers different research processes, these are often focused on specific research paradigms and methods. The aim of this working paper is to define a research process common to different research approaches: behavioral science, design science and action research. The paper reviews research process models from the literature and finally introduces a model of a general research process. The model can be used to further explore the tasks of researchers, with the aim of identifying possibilities of supporting researchers.

[more] The understanding of Electronic Learning (eLearning) has changed significantly in the past decade. Whereas it has been originally often reduced to the mere production of stationary online courses for the purpose of individual, self-guided learning, the need for social exchange among the learners and the teachers is now being increasingly pointed out. One of the reasons for the growing demand for more man-to-man interaction in eLearning lies in the current changes in the Internet environment, which are often described as Web 2.0. In this new age, noted by nearly universal availability of information, ever growing information overflow and changing perception of knowledge, it is necessary to re-evaluate and rethink the traditional structures. The area of academic education is not excluded from this need. As establishments with the clear mission to prepare the students for their future life, the academic institutions have to face the challenge and adapt the education practices -- in content and method -- to the new demands. This necessarily means, that also the understanding and the role of eLearning have to be adjusted. This paper presents a discussion of Virtual Collaborative Learning (VCL), an eLearning method developed at the Chair of Information Management, with a particular view to the surfacing demands of the changing environment. The method has been critically reviewed and evaluated with regards to the changing needs of the society and the students. The aim was to decide whether VCL still has relevance in the near future and to identify further need for improvement of the concept.

[more] This paper deals with tutoring of virtual collaborative learning in the international context. Coaching learners, who work on virtual projects, requires great effort and time investment from the tutors. In the international context, the tutors face an even greater challenge due to culture-related problems, which arise among the participants from different countries. In the following, these difficulties will be discussed and a design will be suggested to prevent them.

[more] This paper describes the background, objectives and methods of my doctoral research concerned with the support of the initiation of research collaboration with the help of information and communication technologies. The research is based on the assumption that providing more information about potential partners would lead to better-grounded decisions about collaboration. The purpose of this research is also to support and utilize Open Research. To address these aims, I suggest the design and creation of an ePortfolio that will aggregate information from the Internet, particularly Web 2.0 applications.

[more] This paper presents an advanced – international – blended learning arrangement. It has been developed, implemented and reviewed regularly in the last 4 years at the authors’ institution. Instead of referring solely to traditional classroom teaching, we use and continually refine this arrangement in our every-day formal teaching and learning processes at Technische Universitaet Dresden. By this we take into regard the changes induced by the Bologna Roadmap and try better to support its “new” didactical objectives: more interactive and interdisciplinary modules with focus upon the (practical) integration of professional and methodical responsibility, decision-making and soft skills.
