  • Conference Proceeding: SatNEx - the European satellite communications network of excellence
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Summary form only given. This paper outlines the primary goal of SatNEx which is to achieve long-lasting integration of the European research in satellite communications and to develop a common base of knowledge. Networks of excellence have been introduced as a new instrument within the 6th IST framework program, and SatNEx is one of the first consortia to implement the new ideas and to overcome the fragmentation of European research. Through co-operation of outstanding universities and research organizations with excellent expertise in satellite communications, SatNEx will build a European virtual centre of excellence in satellite communications and contribute to the realization of the European Research Area (ERA) SatNEx will include an advisory board incorporating representatives of the European space industry, satellite service providers, and standardization and regulation organizations. SatNEx will collaborate with these players and put together a critical mass of resources and expertise needed for making Europe a world force in the field of satellite communications.

Conference Proceeding: Hybrid Satellite & Terrestrial Mobile Network for 4G : Candidate Architecture and Space Segment Dimensioning
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The great effort that is devoted to the definition of the '4G' highlights the need for the MSS ecosystem to explore the opportunity to include satellite into the paradigm of '4G' networks of networks. Satellites may appear as a way to 'fill the holes' of the terrestrial coverage thus offering global mobility to end user. We consider here two missions to be delivered over Europe : an interactive broadcast mission and a two-way broadband mission, both targeting handset, vehicular and nomadic terminals. Firstly a general discussion and a candidate hybrid satellite and terrestrial network architecture is proposed for low- frequency bands under CGC (Complementary Ground Component) license. Secondly the dimensioning of the space segment for both missions is presented. The paper stresses the demand for satellites with large antennas and high amplified power. It also briefly touches on the required adaptation of the 4G air interfaces to the satellite constraints. In addition it shows that the system capacity is mainly driven by the spectrum resource.

Conference Proceeding: Short IRA Codes for Mobile DVB-RCS
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: In this paper, the design of the new short low-density parity-check introduced in the upcoming version of DVB-RCS standard targeting interactive mobile services will be described. The codes performance evaluation on the additive white Gaussian noise sand on a mobile (Rice-distributed) fading channels will be carried out assuming QPSK, 8PSK, 16APSK, and 32APSK modulations.

Conference Proceeding: IMT-2000 Satellite Radio Interface for UMTS Communications over Mobile Satellite Systems
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: This paper provides an overview of the configurations and performance of the 3GPP UTRA FDD WCDMA radio interface to operate over a satellite link. A technical study has been carried in ETSI by the satellite earth satellite technical committee (TC SES) via the mobile satellite system working group. The configurations and performance of the WCDMA over a satellite link are described in the recently published technical specification set.
