Conference Proceeding: The development of theory of mind in children with congenital visual impairments
    Diana Anghel
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Background: Children with a visual impairment experience delays and deficits to understand the mintal states of other persons or to predict their behaviour. The understanding of false belief is the traditional marker for achieving children's theory of mind. This ability is considered to be a major milestone in the acquisition of social cognition. Purpose: The goal of this study is to test the hypothesis that when congenitally blind children are given false-belief tasks that do not depend on sight, they will display perspective-taking ability in contradiction to prior studies. Methods: In investigating this hypothesis, we tested the children on false belief tasks using containers and boxes task with tactile familiarity . Therefore, the present study included two groups of children: 100 children with congenital profound visual impairment and 100 children with normal vision, all aged between 5-7 years. Results: The study found that children who are congenitally blind can acquire an understanding of mind. Conclusions: The most important development in early childhood social cognition is the development of theory of mind. Vision plays a critical role in development of theory of mind at children with visual impairments, but it is not essential. Key words: visual impairment, theory of mind, false-beliefs tasks, social cognition, perspective taking
