  • Article: Evaluation of strongly acidic ion-exchange catalysts and the desulfonation study in the isobutylene dimerization reaction
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Three commercial ion-exchange resin based catalysts were compared under different temperature and liquid-volume hourly space velocity (LHSV) in the isobutene (IB, C4) dimerization reaction using a plug flow reactor in the absence of any selectivity enhancing component. High IB conversion for all catalysts was obtained at or higher than 50 degrees C. But, diisobutene (DIB, C8) selectivity decreased with the increase of temperature. High C8 selectivity was observed with LHSV higher than 1.5 at 50 degrees C. The best catalytic performance of the three resins did not show obvious differences. The effect of the selectivity enhancers on the stability of the resins was also studied. Desulfonation was observed in the C4 dimerization reaction when water or the commonly used enhancer tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) was added to the feed. The deactivation of catalyst resulted in decrease of both IB conversion and C8 selectivity. Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy showed that desulfonation happened in both para and ortho positions of the sulfonated benzene rings. (C) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. • Article: Aberrant expression of clock gene period1 and its correlations with the growth, proliferation and metastasis of buccal squamous cell carcinoma.
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Period1 (PER1) is an important core clock gene, which regulates normal cell proliferations and physiological rhythms of human beings. Recent studies have showed aberrant expressions and altered rhythms of PER1 were highly correlated to the carcinogenesis and development of malignant tumors. However, there is no study on the correlation of aberrant expressions and altered rhythms of PER1 with the growth, proliferation and metastasis of buccal squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC). In this study, PER1 and MMP-2 expression in the cancerous and adjacent noncancerous tissues of 38 patients with BSCC and its correlations with patients' clinical pathologic characteristics were investigated. A mouse model of BSCC was also established and mice were sacrificed at 4 different time points in a period of 24 hours. Xenografted tumor weight, proliferation index (PI), and mitotic index (MI) of tumors in the 4 time groups were detected. Results showed that PER1 expression was significantly down-regulated in cancerous tissues of patients with BSCC (P<0.05). PER1 expression was significantly down-regulated in patients of T3∼T4 staging and those with lymph node metastasis compared to that of T1∼T2 staging and those without lymph node metastasis (P<0.05), respectively. PER1 mRNA expression, MI and tumor weight had significant differences among the 4 time groups, which PI all confirmed to circadian rhythms. MI, PI, MMP-2 mRNA and tumor weight had negative correlation with PER1 mRNA expression. Peak value of PER1 mRNA expression and trough values of MI, PI and tumor weight all appeared in middle activity phase, whereas trough value of PER1 mRNA expression and peak values of MI, PI and tumor weight all occurred in middle rest phase. Our study suggested that aberrant expression of PER1 had significant correlation with the growth, proliferation and metastasis of BSCC and it might act as an anti-oncogene.

  • Article: Temporal trends and spatial variation characteristics of hazardous air pollutant emission inventory from municipal solid waste incineration in china.
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A multiple-year emission inventory of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), including particulate matter (PM), SO(2), NO(x), CO, HCl, As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sb, and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), discharged from municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration in China has been established for the period 2003-2010 by using the best available emission factors and annual activity data. Our results show that the total emissions have rapidly amounted to 28 471.1 t of NO(x), 12 062.1 t of SO(2), 6500.5 t of CO, 4654.6 t of PM, 3609.1 t of HCl, 69.5 t of Sb, 36.7 t of Hg, 9.4 t of Pb, 4.4 t of Cr, 2.8 t of Ni, 926.7 kg of Cd, 231.7 kg of As, and 23.6 g of PCDD/Fs as TEQ (toxic equivalent quantity) by the year 2010. The majority of HAP emissions are concentrated in the eastern central and southeastern areas of China where most MSW incineration plants are built and put into operation. Between 2003 and 2010, provinces always ranking in the top three with largest HAPs emissions are Zhejiang, Guangdong, and Jiangsu. To better understand the emissions of these HAPs and to adopt effective measures to prevent poisoning risks, more specific field-test data collection is necessary.

Article: Variants in the SRD5A2 gene are associated with quality of semen.
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Spermatogenesis and sperm maturation are androgen-dependent processes. Steroid 5α-reductase (SRD5A) is a key enzyme converting testosterone into the more active metabolite, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). We aimed to investigate the association between the genetic variants of SRD5A2 (rs4952197, rs2268797, rs13395648, rs523349 and rs632148) and semen quality. Variant genotyping and semen analysis was performed in 708 males with definite idiopathic infertility by TaqMan SNP genotyping assays and computer-assisted semen analysis, respectively. It was found that the rs13395648 TC genotype was associated with a significantly lower semen volume compared with the TT genotype (P=0.016). The same trend was found between the combination of the TC and CC genotypes and the TT genotype (P=0.020). With regard to variant rs632148, subjects with the GC genotype had significantly lower sperm motility in comparison to those with the GG genotype (P=0.029). The sperm motility between the combination of the GC and CC genotypes and the GC genotype was also significantly different (P=0.033). These findings indicate that genetic variants in the SRD5A2 gene may be associated with semen quality.

  • Article: Over-expression of integrin-linked kinase correlates with aberrant expression of Snail, E-cadherin and N-cadherin in oral squamous cell carcinoma: implications in tumor progression and metastasis.
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Integrin-linked kinase (ILK), an intracellular protein with serine/threonine protein kinase activities, plays a key role in integrin mediated cell-excellular matrix interactions, regulating cell proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, and migration. ILK has been implicated in the development and progression in several malignancies. However, the role of ILK and ILK-mediated epithelial-mensenchymal transition (EMT) in the progression of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has not been well understood. Here, by immunohistochemistry, we studied the expression of ILK, Snail, E-cadherin and N-cadherin in 98 primary OSCC specimens and analyzed their correlations with clinicopathologic profiles and clinical outcome. We also investigated the expression of ILK in 42 corresponding lymph node metastases. Positive expression of ILK protein was detected in 87.8 % of the primary tumors and 100 % of metastatic lesions. Increased ILK expression was correlated strongly with enhanced tumor invasion, higher tumor grade, advanced clinical stage, positive lymph node status and increased risk of recurrence. Higher ILK expression was also observed in lymph node metastases in comparison with the corresponding primary tumor. Moreover, up-regulation of Snail and N-cadherin and down-regulation of E-cadherin correlated significantly with both ILK over-expression and tumor invasion. Patients with higher ILK expression exhibited shorter disease-free survival while those with absent E-cadherin expression exhibited shorter overall and disease-free survival. Taken together, our results suggest that ILK may have an important role in progression and metastasis of OSCC, possibly through EMT involving up-regulation of Snail and consequent aberrant expression of E-cadherin and N-cadherin. ILK should be considered as a critical prognostic indicator for patients with OSCC.
