[more] Many modern commentators think that the way we understand EN I.7, especially the so-called “Function Argument”, determines greatly the Aristotelian perspective over human happiness. But, although starting from the same point, they hold diverging opinions with regard to what this human happiness consist in (the two traditional interpretation of eudaimonia). This paper argues that most commentators have misunderstood the role of the Function Argument within the economy of the Nicomachean Ethics by taking it out of its context and by making it say too much for a preparatory step. Therefore, a special attention is paid to the concept of function (ergon) both in the Aristotelian Ethics and Psychology and the manner the Stagirite builds his case in this section of the 1st Book. The conclusion of the analysis deployed here is that the Function Argument in I.7 cannot be taken to send us to a comprehensive or an intellectualist position.

[more] The aim of this paper is to examine Mill’s arguments for non‐intervention as they are presented in his A Few Words on Non‐Intervention, a text that has been neglected for a very long time. The first step I take is to present his entire approach as depended on a distinction between civilized people and barbarians. From this perspective, the general claim that Mill’s point on non‐intervention is contradictory to his utilitarianism can be easily rejected. Based on this distinction, I claim that Mill considers barbarians as incapable of moral judgments and lacking the practice of obeying the rules, one thing that justifies colonization or conquering neighboring barbarians. In the second part, I try to show that Mill’s A Few Words has two distinct sections: in the first, he discusses two accusations brought by the adversaries of Great Britain – egotism and paternalism. In the last section, he focuses on the foundation of the principle of non‐intervention because he wants to reject the idea that there can be a unique measure in international relations. His interest is represented by a principle of non‐intervention which, although universal in the sense that it should be employeed as basis of international relations, takes into account the various situations virtually possible on the international stage.
