Article: Three-dimensional morphologic analysis of isthmuses in the mesial roots of mandibular molars.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to investigate the three-dimensional (3-D) morphology of isthmuses in the mesial roots of mandibular molars. One hundred twenty-six extracted mandibular molars including 70 first molars (MFMs) and 56 second molars (MSMs) from a Chinese population were scanned by micro-computed tomography, and the apical 5 mm of the root canals with or without isthmuses was reconstructed with 3D-Doctor software. Each reconstructed isthmus model was assigned to 1 of the following 4 categories: sheet connection, separate, mix, and cannular connection. The length of the isthmus (L(i)) and the distance from the bottom of the isthmus to apex (D(ba)) were measured and analyzed. The incidence of an isthmus in the apical 5 mm of the mesial roots was 85%. MFMs had more isthmuses with separate type and mixed type, whereas MSMs had more isthmuses with sheet connections. The L(i) and D(ba) in mandibular molars were 2.331 mm and 1.850 mm, respectively. Article: Investigation of apex locators and related morphological factors.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of three electronic apex locators (EALs) to detect the minor foramen and morphological influencing factors relative to working length determination. Three hundred fifty-six extracted teeth were decoronated, and the coronal portion of the canal was flared. The distance between the major foramen and the file tips (DMFF) was determined by different EALs. The relationship between the DMFFs determined by the EAL and the morphological features of the root apex was analyzed by linear regression analysis. The average DMFFs were 0.261 mm, 0.376 mm, and 0.383 mm for the Root ZX (J. Morita, Kyoto, Japan), Raypex 5 (VDW, Munich, Germany), and Elements Apex Locator (SybronEndo, Anaheim, CA), respectively. The file tips determined by EALs were much closer to the major foramen in teeth with a "lateral major foramen" (p < 0.001). The area and diameters of the minor foramen were significantly related to the variation of the DMFFs determined by EALs. When the "minor foramen" reading was given, the file tip connected to the Root ZX was much closer to the major foramen than the other two EALs. Article: Negotiation of C-shaped canal systems in mandibular second molars.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to investigate the method of canal negotiation in the presence of differently C-shaped orifices using the micro-computed tomography technique. Forty-four extracted mandibular second molars with C-shaped roots were collected from a Chinese population. Size 10 or 15 K files were used to explore the canal orifices when viewed under the surgical operating microscope. Choices in the number and position of the files inserted into the canal system were based on the different orifice shape. After the teeth with files were scanned and reconstructed, the number and position of the files were analyzed. Among 44 teeth, a total of 132 initial files were inserted into 83 orifices, in which 42 orifices had only one initial file, 33 with two, and 8 orifices had three files inserted. Eight main canals were not located because of canal bifurcations in the root, calcification, and dentin fusion. This new method for negotiation combined with careful exploration may provide an effective way for indentifying the nature of the canal system and enhancing debridement in these complex canal anatomies.Journal of endodontics 08/2009; 35(7):1003-8. · 2.95 Impact Factor -
Article: Root canal systems in mandibular first premolars with C-shaped root configurations. Part I: Microcomputed tomography mapping of the radicular groove and associated root canal cross-sections.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to investigate the morphology of the radicular grooves and root canal cross-sections in mandibular first premolars that exhibit a C-shaped root. Eighty-six mandibular first premolars with C-shaped roots were scanned from the coronal to anatomical apex using microCT80. The location, length, and depth of the radicular grooves were measured. The cross-sectional morphology of root canal systems was evaluated at 11 levels. Results were subject to the Kruskal-Wallis test. Of the 86 C-shaped roots, a total of 93 radicular grooves were noted. Most of the grooves (78.5%) were located on the mesiolingual surface of the root. The C-shaped canal could vary considerably in shape at different levels, and the incidence of two canals at the middle and apical was 21% and 80%, respectively. This study shows that radicular grooves may present relevant morphologic variations in the root canal system when the C-shaped root is present.Journal of endodontics 12/2008; 34(11):1337-41. · 2.95 Impact Factor
