My scientific work is focused on the understanding of the fundamental mechanisms that underlie neurodegenerative disorders, mainly Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
I received my MD in 1985 and PhD in 1991 from KU Leuven. I did a postdoc in the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg. Together with C. Haass, I received the Potamkin Award in 2002. Other awards include the 2003 Alois Alzheimer Award, the Joseph Maisin Prize (2005) and the Metlife Foundation Award (2008).
