  • Article: Effect of Cooperative Learning on Student’s Academic Achievement on the Topic of Algebra in Math Course
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Cooperative learning is known an effective educational strategy in improve the academic achievement of students. Students academic achievement in cooperative groups accomplished via promoting others success, through assisting, sharing, Mentoring and encouragement. The goal of a cooperative learning group is to maximize all members learning. To this end, this study examines the impact of cooperative learning on the topic of Algebra in math course between student third grades of secondary in Marv-Dasht city. Cooperative learning was employed to experimental groups and Conventional teaching method was used for control groups. Previous knowledge of students by use of researcher developed algebra academic achievement scale (Tahmasby, 2010) has been evaluated. Academic achievement after the implementation of teaching methods was determined by same scale. The results of this study revealed a significant effect of cooperative learning method on student’s academic achievement in algebra concept in the experimental groups than controls. In addition, cooperative learning methods have similar effect on academic achievement of male and female students in experimental groups. This result indicates the success of cooperative learning versus conventional teaching methods.

Conference Proceeding: The content Analysis of guidance-school mathematics books in Islamic Republic of Iran according to the principles and Components of Constructive Realism approach

ABSTRACT: This paper evaluated the contents of guidance-school mathematics books and the amount of their accordance with principles and components of constructive realism. Following studies on foundations of constructive realism, comprised of both Platonic external realism and Piagetian constructivism perspectives, the researcher discovered 5 principles including 22 components; these principles were: 1. creating an insight as to the real existence of the mathematical world (components 1, 2, 3, 4&5), 2. Making use of subject materials including human being’s individual and social experiences (components 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11&12). 3. Creating correspondence between mathematical language and learners’ spoken and written languages (components 13, 14&15), 4.fostering creativity in order to get learners to create new constructs (components 14, 17, 18&19), and 5. Establishing conceptual links between materials inside the book (components 20, 21&22). In the next step, five experts in mathematics analyzed the content of the books according to the principles. Results of the observation confirmed two principles at 30%; (i.e. 1- establishing conceptual links between materials inside the book and 2- fostering creativity in order to get learners to create new constructs) meanwhile only one principle was confirmed at 50% and 70%, namely the conceptual link principle.
