ABSTRACT: Gingerol is the most abundant constituent of fresh ginger has potent antioxidant activity but it decreases during postharvest storage and processing. The present work efforts have been made to estimate Gingerolcontent in different brand samples of Ginger powder and their antioxidant activity compared with the sample cultivated through organic farming. Organic farmed sample was collected from the FRI, Dehradun (UK), other samples were taken from the markets of Srinagar Garhwal and Dehradun and was identified from the Dept. of Botany H.N.B. Garhwal University, Srinagar Garhwal (UK).All regents and chemicals were used of analytical and HPLC grade and extraction was carried out by hot solvent extraction method. FRAP method was used for Antioxidant activity. Simple reversed-phase HPLC-UV method, with gradient elution, was used to estimate the gingerol.A typical HPLC-UV chromatogram was obtained which exhibited a clean and smooth baseline with excellent resolution where all the marker peaks could be identified and quantified. The amount of gingerolin the sample S1 is 04.54%, in S2 is 08.01%, in S3 is 06.74%, in S4 is 04.20%, in S5 is 06.74% and in S6 is 08.54%, estimated respectively by HPLC analysis. Among all samples, S6 (ginger cultivated through organic farming) has significant quantity of gingerol in comparison to other market samples. The reducing ability of different samples of ginger extracts was inthe range of 368.27 ± 23.43-3107.28 ± 42.31µmol/g dry weight. The FRAP values for the methanolic extracts of rhizomes in allsix varieties were significantly lower than those of vitamin C and α-tocopherol, but higher than that of BHT. When we compared all five market samples with ginger cultivated through organic farming had excellent antioxidant activity. The resultsconclude that ginger which cultivated through organic farming has a significant antioxidant activity and has a positive relationship between antioxidant activities and total phenolic contents. The high antioxidant activity shows the higher level of total phenolic and flavonoids.

ABSTRACT: In this study, methanolic extract of Ficus palmata, Pyrus pashia and Pyracantha crenulata fruits were studied for antioxidant, total phenolics, anthocynins and flavonoids properties. The therapeutic benefits of fruits are often attributed to their antioxidant properties. The extracts wild edible fruits have strong antioxidant activity, highest level to lower level order (total phenol of Ficus palmata 7.91±0.51, Pyracantha crenulata 6.59±0.05 and Pyrus pashia 4.92±0.02), (total flavonoids of Ficus palmata 8.42±0.12, Pyracantha crenulata 7.46±0.05 and Pyrus pashia 4.94±0.08) and (total anthocynins of Pyracantha crenulata 0.62±0.08, Pyrus pashia 0.47±0.02 and Ficus palmata 0.39±0.05) which aroused an increasing interest in the formulation of nutraceuticals. The aim of present study is to examine the antioxidant activity, to estimate different phytochemical of three wild edible fruits (Ficus palmata, Pyrus pashia and Pyracantha crenulata) wild edible fruits of Garhwal Himalaya, Total phenolics compounds, flavonoids content and DPPH radical scavenging activity effects of the extracts were analyzed using HPLC and antioxidant activity was done by using DPPH, ABTS and FRAP method. Wild edible fruits containing secondary metabolites in appreciable amount and have potential to be developed, as a functional food ingredient.

Article: PHARMACOGNOSTIC, PHYTOCHEMICAL AND ANTIMICROBIAL SCREENING OF APHANAMIXIS POLYSTACHYA, AN ENDANGERED MEDICINAL TREE
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: In the present study the bark of Aphanamixis polystachya was investigated for its macroscopic, phytochemical and antimicrobial characteristics. The dried stem bark of A. polystachya was successive extracted with petroleum ether, chloroform, alcoholic and hydromethanolic solvents for 48 hours in soxhlet apparatus and solvents from extracts was evaporated under vacuum. All four extracts were subjected to phytochemical investigation and in vitro antimicrobial screening using different bacterial strains in nutrient agar media. For screening of antimicrobial activity, extracts of dried stem bark of A. polystachya was used at the different doses (10, 20, 50 and 100mg/ml) against the kanamycin, which was used as standard antimicrobial agent at the dose of 30mg/ml. The zone of inhibitions indicates that the extracts of dried stem bark of Aphanamixis polystachya showed significant antimicrobial activity as comparison to kanamycin. The Preliminary phytochemical investigation revealed the presence of various phytoconstituents in each extracts. It showed the presence of carbohydrates, glycosides and saponins.

ABSTRACT: Many plants possess antioxidant ingredients that provided efficacy by additive or synergistic activities. Present article highlights an antioxidant activity of a red listed medicinal plant Aphanamixis polystachya bark which has a strong astringent power. It is used for the treatment of rheumatism, tumours, liver and spleen diseases. Antioxidant activity of the crude extracts of A. polystachya(bark) were assessed using DPPH and FRAP assays. The alcohol, aqueous methanol and petroleum ether extracts exhibited potent antioxidant activity compared to known antioxidants. Due to its natural origin and potent free-radical scavenging ability A. Polystachya could be used as a potential preventive action taken to improve free radical-mediated diseases.
