Why do semiconductor and metallic nanowires prefer to grow along (111) direction?

I found it quite interesting, but does anyone have an explanation for this? I would really appreciate it.

    It is because it requires the lowest energy to form that plane on 3D. I'll advise you to look at the attached paper.

    Actually the growth direction depends strongly on the fabrication tecnique and the substrate orientation.
