The only other one I use is FoxIt reader.

I use only www.qiqqa.com/70557 for OCR, reading, tagging, annotating and organising of PDFs

Wow, I just looked it up and I had no idea there were so many PDF standards. I've always thought it was a matter of poorly compiled documents when I couldn't read them in my reader.
Adobe Reader supports (in addition to their own standards):
The new ISO Standard 32000
PDF/A (long-term preservation of electronic documents)
PDF/X (printing)
PDF/H (healthcare)
PDF/E (engineering)
XMP/RDF
ODBC
Missing is PDF/VT (Graphic technology - Variable data exchange)
You really should be able to read almost anything in PDF with Adobe Reader, provided the document was created
Foxit Reader supports:
Adobe's 1.7 PDF standard (which is also an ISO standard) It doesn't say which extension of the standard as there are three.
PDF/A (I think but it was unclear)
I couldn't find more, but that seems unlikely.
Foxit PhantomPDF:
It says that it supports all PDF standards. I don't know if that really means ALL, but that's what they say.
Well that was fun and I learned a lot. :) -
The great thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from! PDF stands for "Plenty of Dubious Formats"?

@Ian Hah! :)

I apparently didn't finish the sentence: "You really should be able to read almost anything in PDF with Adobe Reader, provided the document was created ". It should read "You really should be able to read almost anything in PDF with Adobe Reader, provided the document was generated correctly".

Is this Foxit thing free?

Foxit reader is a free and compatible PDF reader. I have used it on several occasions.

@James Shanahan,
Thanks. Will try it out one of these days. -
For viewing pdf-files, I have good experiences with PDF-XChange Viewer:
http://pdf-xchange-viewer.en.softonic.com/
For generating pdf-files, I prefer Bullzip PDF printer:
http://www.bullzip.com/products/pdf/info.php
Both software packages are freeware. -
If you use Apple computer, the best software is Preview: you can edit file, add comments, etc.
If you use Ubuntu (or similar OS), there are different open source options. -
Foxit Reader, Google Chrome, another option: upload to Google Docs

As a researcher you will inevitably want to annotate your pdfs, and not just view them. So you will need something more than Chrome.

I do use Nitro PDF Reader http://www.nitroreader.com/ and I found very robust. It does a wonderful job to convert pdf to txt files, which is a must if you want to do semantic analysis.

acrobat is the best ever but not free. you can download from torrent. However adobe reader 10x is also very good & give you option to edit pdf also.....like adding text signatures etc

@Sebastian: Thanks, but I am using http://www.qiqqa.com/70557 which does all that you mention that Mendeley does and much more! (pdf conversions, tagging, suggested themes, suggested next readings, mindmapping, import-export with Mendeley, full library text search with results shown in context.)
