Question

Which genes (gene sets) plays the most important roles in lung cancer or colon cancer?

By applying microarray technologies, we can get a large number of genes at one time. We are working on generating some rule based systems for cancer diagnosis. But first of all, we need to know, from the biological aspects, generally, which genes are the most important genes?

Mutations in the ras gene occur in 40-50% of colon and lung carcinomas. Myc amplifications and Her2 overexpression also occur frequently in colon cancers.

Btw, how do you get these information? From literature or lab work?

But those genes are not very useful for colorectal cancer diagnosis, as they are usually mutated in many different tumours...

There are some papers about it. Well, I recently gave a talk on the therapy of Ras-mutated cancers. COX-2 levels are also usually increased in colon cancers in contrast to normal colon tissues.
