As I was working on my thesis 2010, I used (partly quite old) studies in which the authors emphasized an "existing" connection between the frequency of suffering from the burnout syndrome and the personality of each individual. Here are some examples: Freudenberger und Richelson (1980); Maslach (1982); Burisch (2006); Edelwich (1980), Gann (1979).

Freudenberger, for instance, stated that so called "idealists" are highly predestinated for the burnout syndrom. On the other hand, Maslach reported that even non- committed persons who have no predefined targets nor selfconfidence could suffer from the burnout desease.
Still, I am not sure how current these findings are in 2012.

Another issue you may want to consider concerens the individual coping behavior. Investigations revealed that a burnout risk increased when using inactive strategies to cope with stress resp. problems.
