Very interestiing question. Ch. Alexander was thinking in the right way for little/medium communities, but how to define the different models for the participation? Maybe we can define two levels, the personnal and direct participation, more addapted to these little communities and the virtual one , as a participation model for the great communities using the new possibilities to participare. The future (next) Bienale of Architecture in Venezia can be a good base for the discussion. i will inform about it, specially the ppoint of view of the scholars and academics into the Spanish Pavillion. -
Participatory research at any level requires a balance between the community and those who wield any type of power. Once the dichotomy of this lessens, then we begin to discover methods of incorporating an array of knowledge and applicable skill sets in the planning field. The largest community in the world can become the smallest and most accessible by all means if knowledge is equally distributed, analyzed, and utilized. Anything regarding community participation will require local knowledge. Thus, participatory planning is a method which aims to empower those who are in proximity to a community and whose knowledge will have a direct impact on change within the plan and development. To achieve such results, it is essential for planners to discover what the community conveys as a need, instead of looking from the outside in.

Thanks Geoffrey, yes i agree with you. Dill, 2009 once said participatory planning is one in which everyones idea is respected. The stakeholders use their knwledge, skills and capabilities to compliment and strenghten participatoryapproaches. For this to be realised they must be empowered to carry out their desired goals. Once more thank you
