Question

Regional Imbalances

I want to study the regional imbalances in Pakistan. My MPhil work was on the issue of conditional and unconditional convergence across the provinces of Pakistan. Now I want to extend my that work into my Phd. But I am not very much clear that how extend that work. I will appreciate if there is anyone who can guide me in this respect.

just few comments on u r query (as u himself is a learned scholar ) on the basis of few parameters and techniques you can measure the imbalances . of course , u need to decide whether , u wish to choose a particular sector for in depth study or wish to measure over all imbalances across the region !!!
and pls dont think abt extending it !! it should be free from previous one!!

  • Is it possible for you to share your mphil work with me because after that probably I would comment further I am very interested in such work and also qurious a bit that how you measured the convergence (conditional or unconditional) because there are many data issues at provincial level. Your work seems interesting!

I presume you are using the Solow-Swan Growth Model (1956). Why don't you try using Panel Data for Pakistan. I am doing the same work for the case of the Philippines but it is based on cross-regional analysis. Latest literatures suggest the use of Panel Analysis to take into account heterogeneity, endogeneity, and other statistic issues related to cross-sectional analysis. In my case, since I have 73 observation, I utilized quantile regression after subjecting my explanatory variables to WALS and BMA regression to address model uncertainty. There is a statistical package within STATA that you can download to run your WALS and BMA. Refer to this article for further discussions:

Next step: Why dont you study the Growth Determinants of the Pakistan? There is an increasing lterature on this treating on Model Averaging. Take a look! This can be able to explain different convergent patterns, if they exist.

I am really thankul for all valuable comments and suggestions of you people. I am also really sorry for responding late as I was not intouch with my researchgate account. Asma Hyder: my study was quite simple and I faced some data issues but most of them were solved by the provincial data generated by kaiser bengali. My both parts of MPhil thesis, i.e., conditional and unconditional convergence, are available on net.
Akram: I actually done panel data analysis and it is fixed effects estimation procedure.
Amitabh and Christiano: I am really thankful for your valuable comments.
I hope that we will communicate in future.
Note: I actually discarded that idea and done my Phd Dissertation on conflict and development with refernce to Pakistan. I can share my views and findings in this respect and welcome your comments.
