First, start of by writing it yourself. That way you know there is no overt copying from other people. plagiarism in the materials and methods is not of too much concern.. there are only so many ways of saying "cells were maintained at 37º C in a...."
You can also cut and paste paragraphs into google scholar. it searches full text of all the decent journals. -

So if I write everyhing myself with an accurate quotation and citations, I do not need to check my paper for plagiarism, do I?
-
You have to check....sometimes our own manuscript matches with the existing literature. Although it happens rarely, it is always recommended to check for plagiarism...

Just a note, because I once asked this myself... It is not considered plagiarism to include the full text of papers that you have written, and had published, in your own thesis/ dissertation.

Just attended a Plagiarism Seminar at the University of Pretoria. The facilitator was Dr. John Barrie. He co-created Turnitin which is the world leading software in plagiarism. It is used by over 20 million in 126 countries.

Linda: yes, this is a bit of a gray area... in many universities the researchers don't hold the copyright, the university does, and therefore they are not authorized to sign over the copy right to the journals themselves, then when it comes time to publish the dissertation, the publisher wants the copyright also. Its such a mess.. Thats why I like journals such as Plos One.

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for.. but you can check: turnitin.com

I simply send every sentence to Google. It also find some interesting connections!

Try Grammarly.com. It's an excellent piece of software. It tells you if your references are from the correct sources. If an error is found, it will give you the correct source via an online database.
