You have provided an insightful answer which reveals to me that the issues of WW1 and post WW1 conferences remain unresolved in 2012. The most interesting development is the re-emergence of Turkish influence in the Arab world and whether that will grow is difficult to predict. During WW1, the Ottoman Empire was on its last legs whereas modern Turkey of 2012 is engaging the Arab world. -

The Sykes-Picot agreement is only relevant now in regards to how it has impacted the development of Syria and the Middle East as a whole. Directly, the agreement has played no part in the Middle East after the countries gained political independence. Indirectly, it could be argued that the Sykes-Picot agreement has greatly affected development of the Middle East because it established lasting zones of influence and a precedent where interested Western powers could easily become involved in local political matters.
I hope this helps!
