Question
Is 'Sr ' grain refiner for cast Al-alloys?
As we know that 'Sr' is a good modifier for wrought Al-Alloys. is it possible to use Sr as grain refiner for cast aluminum allys. If it is so pls let me know the feasible conditions.

at one stage Na as well as Sr were added to AlSi alloys for refining purposes and evidence was shown in many cases of refinement of AlSi eytectic interlamellar particles and spacings. However, refining was not homogenuous in many cases and fading effects were reported. Recently, I have found evidence of refinement of microstructure in Al Si alloys by dispersing nano-particles. -
Thanks a lot for your valuable explanation

Sr is basically a eutectic modifier which modifies the platelike eutectic. Generally, refinement can be achieved by using AlP which acts as hetergeneous nucleation sites for the primary Si. The refinement achieved by using nanoparticles comes from a different mechanism and depends upon the wettability of the particles with Al liquid.

To my knowledge TiB2 might work. Are you thinking about some specific alloys or alloy systems?
