Information Literacy: The Fourth R

Hi All: I am working on my next book with the working title "The Fourth R: What Students Are Missing and What Higher Education Can Do About It!" I have written a rough draft of a white paper to share with colleagues on this list. The URL to the white paper is:

Hi Gail, liked the White Paper. Fully endorse your view that IS needs to break out into the wider Academic community. Truth is IS will not be taken seriously by students unless it is consistently driven by Academic/Teaching staff. Another point to make is that the content will be greatly enriched by the subject and teaching expertise of academics.

Hi Gail, I like this article, it touches problems we experience in Poland, too. Would you allow me to translate it into Polish and place in the free librarians online journal "Bulletin EBIB" (http://www.nowyebib.info/) ?
    Kind regards

    Regards.

In the field of biomedical research, the three R's are well known, as we all adhere have to these principles when applying for ethical permits for animal experimentation. The three principles of Replacement, Reduction and Refinement for animal experimentation, proposed in 1959 in a report by Russell and Burch (The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique. London, Methuen, 1959) are routinely called the three R's. Therefore, when I saw the question about a fourth R, I immediately thought that this had something to do with animal ethics.
Then I read that your three R's are Reading, wRiting, aRithmatic. So are these "three R's" (which are actually an R, a W and an A) equally recognized, or is it just an attempt of a very constructed title?

@Bjorn I don't think it was an attempt to construct a title. The term the 3R's is a common phrase used in discussion about education in the UK, and possibly other English speaking countries. Politicians and educationalists for example will talk about focusing on the basics in education or the 3R's. It has long been a challenge to find the topic that is most important after this, in other words the fourth R. This link will give you a flavour [ http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-14371183 ] of the debate.
