Image Analysis and Optimization

I've been developing a program to track the way in which a user's mouse interacts with an image online. The idea is optimizing design to insight a specific system of engagement from the viewer. However I'm wondering what the proper method for selecting the images might be. I been using slight variations on abstract imagery but I currently have no good system for minimizing variables, so I can target the protagonist. Any ideas or reading suggestions? Also, any good ideas on categories of images?
