I once conducted a study to examine the combined effects of creativity, imagination and personality traits on the academic performance of design students. I found that initiating imagination, transforming imagination, usefulness, extraversion, openness and conscientiousness indirectly influenced academic performance through their impact on conceiving imagination. In other words, conceiving imagination partially mediated the effects of the aforementioned variables on academic performance. Among these effects, usefulness had the strongest influence. It implied that student designers with the capability to generate valuable thoughts or works are a prerequisite of their academic success. Student achievement will increase if the capacities of sensibility, intuition, concentration, effectiveness and dialectics can be enhanced in a given educational system. In addition, it should be restated that extraversion had a negative effect on conceiving imagination, which in turn affected student academic success.
In addition, we also found that initiating imagination, usefulness, extraversion and openness had direct effects on student achievement. Among these influences, initiating imagination had a significant, negative effect on academic performance. This result implied that the novel ideas student designers initially generate may not be valued, unless these ideas are later proved to be adaptable and practical through the process of conceiving imagination. Extraverts are good candidates for team-based activities. Open people are curious, imaginative, and have a greater tendency towards cognitive exploration. Both traits seem to fit the team-based context of the design industry perfectly.
This paper entitled “The interplay of creativity, imagination, personality traits and academic performance” will appear on the upcoming issue of Imagination, Cognition and Personality.
Do you really think if you were not creative you would have been able to ask a question such as yours? Of course creativity influence academic success. If you want an experimental proof then you are the best experimental proof! Put yourself to the test!
All the best.
Creativity is the basis of each, and academic success. It is not necessary to prove, because it belongs to the domain of axiomatic.
Definitely yes. Creativity is one of the major keys to success in the academic field also like in any other fields. Creativity is backbone of research and development. It is important in creating good and effective presentations also. Creativity plays a vital role in designing effective tools for teaching and learning as well as measuring academic achievements.
