Article: Agency theory: new insights into the health care industry.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The economic theory of agency deals with the relationship that arises when one individual delegates authority to another. It offers powerful insights into the organization of health care delivery systems. This paper examines how relationships between doctors, patients, and hospitals can be explored within an agency framework and applied to institutional, fee-for-service, and HMO settings. The Journal of medical practice management: MPM 02/1989; 4(3):165-9. -
Article: A return to insurance companies' dominance in the group health market?
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Financial hardships have caused a consolidation in the health maintenance organization (HMO) industry. Down-sizing and mergers have occurred throughout the spectrum of investor-owned and insurance and hospital-sponsored plans. Some regional HMOs seem to have fared better. Further, it is likely that investor-owned HMOs will have limited access to capital markets in the forseeable future. The question of continued and/or expanded involvement by the major national health insurers remains unsettled. It does not appear that these institutional investors will resume their domination of health care financing in the near future. The Journal of medical practice management: MPM 02/1989; 4(4):235-41. -
Article: Contrasting the economic outlook for dentistry and medicine.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Since 1978, expenditures for dental services, adjusted for inflation, have been almost level while the total number of dentists increased. Applicants and enrollments at American dental schools have decreased. The most important uncertainty clouding the economic future of dentistry is the impact of declines in dental disease on the demand for dental services. Medicine is also undergoing change and has experienced many of the same forces at work in dentistry. However, continuing innovations in the diagnosis and treatment of disease form a stable foundation for the demand for physicians' services, which should provide favorable economic conditions for practicing physicians. The major uncertainties for medicine are changes in the structure, finance, and reimbursement of physicians services which may result from efforts to control the cost of these new technologies. The Journal of medical practice management: MPM 02/1989; 5(1):8-17. -
Article: Cost determination: the essential element in medical practice budget development and cost containment programs.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The process of cost-containment in health care begins at the level of delivery of service. This article describes an implementation and delivery system which addresses the process of cost determination. It develops an operating budget establishing cost centers to allocate direct and indirect costs and provides the framework for a cost-containment program within a medical practice. The Journal of medical practice management: MPM 02/1989; 5(2):102-8. -

Article: Hospital closure: management and policy issues.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: As hospital closures have increased between the years 1980-1987, it has become essential for hospital administrators to be aware of the effects of an increasingly complex and competitive environment on their institutions. The purpose of this paper is to examine variables correlated with risk of closure, and to use these data in a context to suggest a managerial approach that will minimize risk. The open systems perspective, which emphasizes uncertainty as an essential component of the planning environment, is suggested as the optimal managerial approach. The Journal of medical practice management: MPM 02/1989; 5(2):84-8. -
Article: Mead Data Central's MEDIS: medical information access in full-text.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Electronic information access is an imperative skill for the modern health professional. Mead Data Central's MEDIS overcomes the limitations of "abstract-only" information networks and provides rapid access to a large collection of full-text medical information. With its proprietary communications software, Mead can display citations in a paged format with on-screen highlighting (in "reverse video") of search terms as they appear in documents. Users can move through the electronic pages as easily as they would thumb through a journal or book. A practice section on MEDIS is billed only for connect charges for using, and a unique on-line tutorial, which, while not specific for MEDIS, introduces users to searching the Mead system. Training is available to subscribers in several major cities and training software is available. MEDIS is a unique resource to access medical literature in full-text quickly and efficiently. The Journal of medical practice management: MPM 02/1989; 4(4):255-60. -
Article: The Lovelace Medical Center: strategies for advancing health care services in the southwest.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Organized in 1922, the Lovelace Clinic successfully provided health care services throughout the Southwest utilizing a group practice format under the aegis of a nonprofit foundation. In 1984, the Foundation contracted with Hospital Corporation of America to form a for-profit health care organization which allows the provision of high quality health care through a group practice professional corporation, a 238-bed inpatient facility, a 70,000-member health maintenance organization, and an independent research and education foundation. The Journal of medical practice management: MPM 02/1989; 4(3):190-6. -

Article: Physician participation in prepayment programs for the uninsured.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The problem of the growing number of uninsured increasingly affects physician practices. In Rochester, New York, a cooperative effort between hospitals, physicians, and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plan created an insurance program designed for low income uninsured patients. Modified benefits and subsidies from physicians, hospitals and Blue Cross and Blue Shield brought premiums to levels less than half of the rate for unsubsidized coverage. Steps undertaken in the product's development addressed physician concerns, and ensured physician participation sufficient to meet the needs of the program. The Journal of medical practice management: MPM 02/1989; 5(2):125-9. -
Article: Computers for the continuing education of practicing physicians.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Computer-based medical education became practical with the wide-spread availability of personal computers and the ease of dialing in to a central computer via standard telephone lines with a modem. Continuing education credits can now be earned from the privacy and convenience of the physician's home or office via the computer. A variety of courses are available from national medical organizations, medical schools, and medical publishers. While examples can give a flavor of the type of courseware available, only hands-on use can help you decide if this style of education fits yours. The Journal of medical practice management: MPM 02/1989; 5(2):113-9. -
