Article: Congenital isolate and total optic disc coloboma
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Isolated and total optic disc coloboma is a markedly rare congenital anomaly of the eye. Congenital eye colobomas frequently present with eye anomalies and systemic signal findings. We present a case of isolated total optic disc coloboma without systemic involvement, which has been rarely reported in the literature.Annals of Ophthalmology 04/2012; 39(1):75-77. -
Article: Serous supraciliochoroidal effusion after trabeculotomy ab externo
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A 20-year-old man underwent uneventful trabeculotomy ab externo for open-angle glaucoma. One week postoperatively, ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) revealed annular serous ciliochoroidal effusion and communicating fluid pass between the suprachoroidal space and excisted trabecular meshwork. Four months after surgery, intraocular pressure was well controlled without medication. The UBM revealed suprachoroidal effusive space and no fluid pass. Suprachroidal effusion should be considered a possible complication after trabeculotomy ab externo.Annals of Ophthalmology 04/2012; 34(2):151-152. -
Article: Age-related macular disease in a 91-year-old patient: Histologic findings
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Age-related macular degeneration in the eye of a 91-year-old man was studied histologically. Typical of this disease, which manifests as death of central photoreceptors, were dystrophic changes of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and neural retina. Also typical were increased drusen deposits, which accumulated between the RPE basement membrane and the inner layer of Bruch's membrane, and choroidal neovascularization. We histologically observed and demonstrated a subclinical neovascularization that fluorescein angiography did not.Annals of Ophthalmology 04/2012; 32(3):206-209. -
Article: Holmium laser sclerostomy: A 3-year follow-up
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Holmium laser sclerostomy has been introduced as an alternative to standard external filtering glaucoma procedures. We evaluated this procedure in a prospective study of 40 holmium laser sclerostomies performed at our clinic and followed for 3 years. Antimetabolites were not used. Based on our results, we concluded that holmium laser sclerostomy performed without antimetabolites has a lower success rate than trabeculectomy.Annals of Ophthalmology 04/2012; 32(2):113-115. -

Article: Unusual intraorbital foreign body
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Penetrating eye injury is an important cause of ocular morbidity in India, especially in the pediatric and adolescent age group. Sometimes these injuries are associated with retained intraorbital foreign body. We report herein for the first time a child who had an open globe injury with a retained unusually large intraorbital foreign body (iron nut).Annals of Ophthalmology 04/2012; 38(2):145-147. -
Article: Hyperplastic persistent pupillary membrane associated with subacute angle-closure glaucoma
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: We describe a case of hyperplastic persistent pupillary membrane (HPPM) with good visual acuity associated with angle-closure glaucoma. Both gonioscopy and Ultrasound biomicroscopy showed a narrow, occludable angle. A diagnosis of subacute angle closure was made and Nd: YAG iridotomy was undertaken in both eyes. Patients with HPPM may be at an increased risk of angle-closure glaucoma.Annals of Ophthalmology 04/2012; 37(1):51-53. -
Article: Comparative efficacy of gel-forming and ophthalmic solutions of 0.5% timolol in open-angle glaucoma
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: We compared the efficacy in lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) of 0.5% timolol maleate gel-forming solution (GFS) once daily with 0.5% timolol maleate ophthalmic solution twice daily in patients with open-angle glaucoma. In both treatment groups (30 eyes each), IOP was measured at baseline and weeks 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24. The mean decrease of IOP at trough ranged from 5.5 to 5.9 mm Hg for timolol GFS and from 6.1 to 6.5 mm Hg for timolol solution.Annals of Ophthalmology 04/2012; 34(4):211-214. -
Article: Argon laser treatment of pterygium
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The effectiveness of argon laser therapy on pterygium management as a primary modality and as adjunctive therapy to surgery was assessed. Twelve pterygia were surgically excised, 18 pterygia were treated with surgical excision followed by argon laser therapy, and 11 primary pterygia received argon laser alone. A statistically significant difference, was found between pretreatment and post-treatment sizes of pterygia in all groups. At 24-month follow-up, no pterygia in the laser group showed fibrovascular growth over 1 mm.Annals of Ophthalmology 04/2012; 34(1):26-29. -
Article: CHARGE association in a 19-year-old woman
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A 19-year-old woman with patent ductus arteriosus, retarded growth, hearing loss, hypoplasia of the uterus, amenorrhea, and normal karyotype was referred to the eye clinic. She had been initially suspected as having Turner syndrome. On examination, optic nerve head coloboma, choroidal coloboma, and microphthalmos were found in the left eye. The diagnosis of CHARGE association was made. Ophthalmologists should be aware of the possible systemic syndrome and its association with coloboma.Annals of Ophthalmology 04/2012; 34(4):234-237. -
Article: Ultrastructural immunolocalization of fibronectin in descement membrane of commercial pig cornea
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the ultrastructural morphology and the light and electron microscopic immunolocalization of fibronectin in porcine Descemet membrane (DM). Descement membrane was composed mainly of fibrillar material and was more electron-dense on the stromal face. Immunohistochemistry revealed a linear staining in the DM-posterior stroma interface. By immunoelectron microscopy, fibronectin appeared localized along the electrondense band of DM and in the posterior stroma above DM.Annals of Ophthalmology 04/2012; 34(1):15-18. -
Article: White spots in right fundus and exudative retinal detachment in other eye in a man receiving hemodialysis
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A 32-year-old man receiving hemodialysis for treatment of renal failure complained of blurred vision in his left eye. The patient had systemic hepertension and IgA nephropathy, and was treatment with a corticosteroid. Constricted retinal arteries and a few white spots at the deep retinal layer were seen in the right fundus, and multiple white spots and exudative retinal detachment were visibla in the left fundus.Annals of Ophthalmology 04/2012; 34(3):230-233. -

A 23-year-old man had dilated, tortuous retinal veins and uveitis in the left eye; oral aphthae; and ulceration of the colon. A 52-year-old man had a swollen optic disc, yellowish exudates around the retinal vessels, retinal hemorrhages, and uveitis in the right eye; oral aphthae; skin lesions; and genital ulceration.Annals of Ophthalmology 04/2012; 33(1):73-75. -
Article: Diagnosis of retinal arterial macroaneurysm presenting as subhyaloid hemorrhage by indocyanine green videoangiography
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A 66-year-old hypertensive woman complained of sudden loss of vision in her left eye. The clinical examination disclosed a subhyaloid hemorrhage obscuring the fovea. Fluorescein angiography showed a hyperfluorescent spot under the hemorrhage, but details were obscured. Indocyanine green videoangiography revealed a retinal arterial macroaneurysm as the cause of bleeding. Indocyanine green videoangiography appears to be useful in the diagnosis of retinal arterial macroaneurysm obscured by preretinal hemorrhage.Annals of Ophthalmology 04/2012; 32(2):140-141. -
Article: Alkaptonuria Presenting with Conjunctival Lesion
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Examination of the conjunctiva/sclera and surrounding structures is an important component of any physical exam. The articles by Dr. Fuentes-Paez et al. and by Dr. Sharma et al. provide critical information for a good exam of the eye and surrounding structures. Reading these two articles in conjunction with a basic text of ocular microanatomy will provide a great refresher course on this topic. More importantly, it will also provide an invaluable guide to understanding the dynamics of changes in color and texture of the conjunctiva and surrounding tissue.Annals of Ophthalmology 04/2012; 39(2):150-151. -

Article: Post-examination processing in the SITA standard algorithm compromises the advantage of a faster patient testing time
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: PurposeTo investigate the time taken for Swedish Interactive Threshold Algorithm (SITA)-standard (SITA-s) data management from first stimulus to printed results. MethodsProspective case series. Twenty-one subjects underwent visual field testing of the right eye with both SITA-s and Humphrey Full Threshold (FTT). The order of the tests (SITA-s and FTT) were randomized for each subject. ResultsThe time-to-finish calculation and saving was significantly longer for SITA-s (41%, p<0.001) than FTT. The patient testing time and total testing time was 47% and 39% shorter with SITA than with FTT, respectively (p<0.001). ConclusionThe data processing of the SITA-s compromises by 8% (p<0.001) some of the advantages of the faster patient testing time.Annals of Ophthalmology 04/2012; 37(2):91-94. -
