The aim of Natural Product Research is to publish important contributions in the field of natural product chemistry. In order to be published in the shortest possible time, manuscripts are invited in camera ready state. The journal covers all aspects of research in the chemistry and biochemistry of naturally occurring compounds. The communications include coverage of work on natural substances of land and sea and of plants, microbes and animals. Discussions of structure elucidation, synthesis and experimental biosynthesis of natural products as well as developments of methods in these areas are welcomed in the journal. Finally, research papers in fields on the chemistry-biology boundary, eg. fermentation chemistry, plant tissue culture investigations etc., are accepted into the journal. The current impact factor is 0.527.

    ABSTRACT: In this study, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the hexane extract of the root of Ventilago madraspatana were evaluated. Based on the significant bioactivity of crude hexane extract, an active compound was purified from the root extract. The active compound was further purified and identified as aromodendrin-4'-methyl ether by the (1)H NMR spectrum. The isolated compound significantly inhibited Staphylococcus epidermidis with the lowest MIC and MBC at 78 μg/mL (P < 0.05). The compound also exhibited significant anticandidal activity with MIC and MBC values of 312 and 625 μg/mL, respectively. The radical scavenging activity of aromodendrin-4'-methyl ether was evident by its lower IC50 values of 60 μg/mL for DPPH scavenging and 3.2 μg/mL for ABTS scavenging. The compound also exhibited ferrous ion chelation and H2O2 scavenging activities. The study is an attempt to increase the industrial utility of V. madrasapatana.

    ABSTRACT: The essential oils (EOs) from the Brazilian species Croton zehntneri, Pterodon emarginatus and Schinopsis brasiliensis were examined for their chemical constituents, and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The composition of EOs was determined by using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry analysis, while the antioxidant activity was evaluated through the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assays. Furthermore, the antimicrobial activity was investigated against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (both Gram-negative), Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) and Candida parapsilosis (fungus). The main components of C. zehntneri, P. emarginatus and S. brasiliensis were identified as estragole, trans-anethole, b-caryophyllene and myrcene. Among the EOs, P. emarginatus showed the highest antioxidant activity, with an IC50 of 7.36 mg/mL and a Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity of 3748mmol/g determined by DPPH and ORAC assays, respectively. All EOs showed low activities against the bacterial strains tested, whereas the C. zehntneri oil and its main constituent estragole exhibited an appreciable antifungal activity against C. parapsilosis.

    ABSTRACT: This study was conducted to analyse structural changes through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) after alkaline pretreatment of wheat straw for optimum steaming period. During the study, 2 mm size of substrate was soaked in 2.5% NaOH for 1 h at room temperature and then autoclaved at 121°C for various steaming time (30, 60, 90 and 120 min). Results revealed that residence time of 90 min at 121°C has strong effect on substrate, achieving a maximum cellulose content of 83%, delignification of 81% and hemicellulose content of 10.5%. Further SEM and FTIR spectroscopy confirmed structural modification caused by alkaline pretreatment in substrate. Maximum saccharification yield of 52.93% was achieved with 0.5% enzyme concentration using 2.5% substrate concentration for 8 h of incubation at 50°C. This result indicates that the above-mentioned pretreatment conditions create accessible areas for enzymatic hydrolysis.

    ABSTRACT: Stephania glabra (Roxb.) Miers (Menispermaceae) has long been used for the treatment of asthma, tuberculosis, dysentery, hyperglycaemia, cancer, fever, intestinal complaints, sleep disturbances and inflammation in many Asian countries. It mainly contains alkaloids and, until now, over 30 alkaloids such as bisbenzylisoquinolines, hasubanalactams, berberines and aporphines have been isolated from its tuber. Most of its traditional medicinal activities are scientifically approved by various in vitro and in vivo studies. It shows remarkable anti-psychotic, anti-diabetic, antipyretic, analgesic, antimicrobial and anti-hypertensive activities. This work includes comprehensive information on the ethnobotany, chemistry and pharmacology of S. glabra. This review also focuses on the future perspectives with main emphasis on the establishment of therapeutic index and safety index of the plant. This review concludes that S. glabra has a great potential to treat various diseases, and could be used as a source for novel healthcare products in the near future, which needs further studies.

    ABSTRACT: Pistacia lentiscus L. is known in some Tunisian forest area by its fixed oil used in traditional medicine as an antiseptic product. This investigation is the first to study the antimicrobial activity of P.lentiscus edible oil and its phenolic extract. Oil was extracted from fruits harvested from six provenances located in Tunisia. The antimicrobial activity was tested using disc diffusion assay and the broth dilution method. Kbouch and Sidi Zid oils were most efficient (p < 0.003) against, respectively, Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus niger with an inhibition zone of 9.33 mm. The phenolic extract had the largest spectrum of sensitive microorganisms. The minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration results showed that all strains were inhibited by both oil and extract.

    ABSTRACT: This study aimed at the determination of chemical composition of essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation, and to evaluate their phytotoxic and antifungal activities. Leaves of Ruta chalepensis L. were collected from the region of Tensift Al Haouz (High Atlas Mountains) Marrakech, Morocco. The essential oil (oil yield is 0.56%) was analysed by GC-FID and GC/MS. Twenty-two compounds were identified and accounted for 92.4% of the total oil composition. The major components were undecan-2-one (49.08%), nonan-2-one (33.15%), limonene (4.19%) and decanone (2.71%). Antifungal ability of essential oils was tested by disc agar diffusion against five plant pathogenic fungi: Fusarium proliferatum, Fusarium pseudograminearum, Fusarium culmorum, Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium polyphialidicum. The oils were also tested in vitro for herbicidal activity by determining their influence on the germination and the shoot and root growth of two weed species, Triticum durum and Phalaris canariensis L.

    ABSTRACT: Effect of Acacia honey from north-west Nigeria on sodium arsenite-induced oxidative damage and clastogenicity in male Wistar rats was investigated. Animals were divided into four groups and were treated daily via oral gavage for one week before they were sacrificed. Brain, liver and blood serum were collected for antioxidant and protein assays. Clastogenicity, in vitro antioxidant activity, vitamins and minerals were also evaluated. From the results, co-administration of Acacia honey with sodium arsenite on the animals increased (P < 0.05) glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase activities with concomitant decrease in malondialdehyde levels and anti-clastogenic effects relative to the group treated with sodium arsenite only. The honey possesses reducing power, high hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity, good amount of vitamins (A, C and E), flavonoids (5.08 ± 0.92 mg QE/100 g) and phenolics (5.40 ± 0.69 mg GAE/100 g). The minerals present include zinc, iron, sodium, magnesium, potassium and calcium. In conclusion, Acacia honey from Nigeria may mitigate oxidative stress and clastogenicity.

    ABSTRACT: Depression is on the rise globally and expected to lead in global burden of diseases by 2030. The current therapy has serious limitations in terms of safety, efficacy, tolerability and therapeutic success. This review, based on the literature of the last decade, is aimed at exploring the preclinical profile of plant-based saponins (the abundant secondary metabolite) as an emerging therapy for depression. Enough scientific evidences reflect that saponins promote neurogenesis, restore monoaminergic tone and enhance neurotrophic factors. In multiple stress models, they have exhibited adaptogenic effects via normalising hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis, corticosterone levels and oxidative stress. Scientific data revealed neuroprotective effect of saponins by inhibiting apoptosis and intraneuronal calcium dynamics. Many plants possessing saponins as their principal antidepressant moiety need investigation at clinical level. Last decade literature revealed numerous preclinical reports supporting the role of saponins as natural cure for depression and justified their inclusion in antidepressant drug discovery programs.

    ABSTRACT: From the n-BuOH-soluble fraction of a MeOH extract of the fruits of Rosa soulieana, one new phenolic glucoside (1) was isolated along with five known compounds, comprising two lignin glycosides, two flavonoid glycosides and a phenolic glycoside. The chemical structure of the new compound was elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses, including ESI-MS, UV, IR, (1)H and (13)C NMR, DEPT and 2D NMR (HSQC and HMBC). All the isolated compounds were evaluated for their antioxidant activity by using ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzoline-6-sulfonic acid)) assay. Among these compounds, 1, 3 and 6 exhibited strong scavenging activity in ABTS(√+)(SC50 = 102.10, 193.85, 65.38 μmol/L, respectively) compared with the positive control l-ascorbic acid (Vc) (SC50 = 117.16 μmol/L).

    ABSTRACT: A Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc. cv. Miyagawa) spontaneous mutant, Shinheungri, produces fruit with an abnormal red-coloured peel during ripening. The peel and pulp extracts of Shinheungri fruit were evaluated for polyphenolic contents and antioxidant activities by using various in vitro assays. Compared with those of wild type (WT), Shinheungri exhibited slightly higher total flavonoid content and antioxidant activities. The results of UPLC analyses indicate that the peel and pulp extracts of Shinheungri fruit were rich in mainly hesperidin, and they had different flavonoid composition. The present data on Shinheungri revealed a potential source of powerful flavonoids for further detailed phytochemical investigation.

    ABSTRACT: Two new sulphur-containing metabolites, asterisulphoxide 1 and asterisulphone 2, together with six known compounds, coniferaldehyde 4, 4-hydroxy-2-methoxybenzaldehyde 3, methylcaffeate 5, isobutyrate 10-isobutyryloxy-8,9-epoxythymyle 6, 8,9-dihydroxy-10-isobutyryloxythymol 7 and 8-hydroxy-9,14-diisobutyryloxythymol 8, were isolated from Asteriscus maritimus roots. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidence and comparison with authentic samples. Compounds 1-8 were assessed for their in vitro antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aureofasciens, Burkholderia glathei, Bacillus pumilus and their antifungal effects against Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium digitatum, Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici, using the disc diffusion method (20 μL/disc). A remarkable inhibition zone 10-15 mm of the growth of the bacterial and fungal agents was observed. The obtained results suggest that the isolated compounds could be promising abiotic antimicrobial agents.

    ABSTRACT: Acorus calamus L., a tall, perennial, grass-like monocot plant from the Acoraceae family, is a well-known plant in Indian traditional medicines for centuries. It is a highly valued herb as it acts as a rejuvenator for brain and nervous system. It is a main medhya drug, which has the property of improving the memory power and intellect. Rhizomes of the plant are widely used in the treatment of number of ailments such as epilepsy, mental ailments, chronic diarrhoea, dysentery, fever, abdominal tumours, kidney and liver troubles, and rheumatism. A. calamus leaves, rhizomes and its essential oil possess many biological activities such as antispasmodic, carminative and are compiled in a simple approach in this review. This review presents a pragmatic description that deals with chemical constituents, toxicology, ethnobotany and pharmacological properties of A. calamus for easy and better understanding of the outstanding medicinal potential of this very special plant and sirens for its conservation.

    ABSTRACT: To identify the most active antimicrobial fraction of Folium Syringae, four common pathogens were used in an in vitro screening. The results indicated that the combination of the 30% and 60% ethanol fraction (FSC) obtained from the water extraction was the most active fraction with a minimal inhibitory concentration of 0.65 mg mL(- 1). FSC was also found to be able to protect mice from a lethal infection of Staphylococcus aureus at clinical dosage (0.2 g kg(- 1)) with a survival rate of 83.3%. The antibacterial activity of FSC was then tested using the serum pharmacology method which revealed that FSC exhibits a more long-lasting activity than the positive control (levofloxacin hydrochloride). The main components were confirmed to be iridoid glycosides and flavones by HPLC-MS analysis.
